So... I have an awesome-sauce new phone. I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile. Part of this move was getting a trio of Galaxy S 4G (me, SO and Stampy) for free.

The phones came with a 16Gb Micro SD card, and the movie inception loaded on them. Looking at my music... most of it is fine and DRM free. But I looked at the cost to upgrade all of my music to iTunes Plus, and it would run me $25.20 for three albums and 54 songs.

The Albums are :
MTv Unplugged: Kiss
Stone Sour (first album)
Nightmare Revisited

there are a few songs on the list of individual songs that would suck to lose... but I know I could probably get them back.

This would all be done in an attempt to convert the stupid things to MP3, and then load them to my memory card.

Would it be worth the cost to upgrade them, or would it just be easier to burn them to CD and rip them to MP3 directly?

Since I own the effing music to begin with, it would be legal to do in either case, but based on convenience and time to energy spent.... would it really be worth spending an additional $25.00 to "relicense" the music I purchased legally already?

I am already content to not bother with my GBH collection as I really do not dig on them. My Ramones Collection will be kept, but not synced. My DRI will likely be backed up and not re-synced.

Well, it's easier and faster to just upgrade them, but it's cheaper to burn and re-rip (if you don't mind a generation of quality loss).

As there's nothing there that particularly tickles my musical fancy, it's pretty easy for me to say "just burn and re-rip." :)

Assuming you've got an average of 12 songs per album, that's 90 songs. Off the top of my head, that's going to come out to around 28 cents per song. How much would it cost to buy them all on iTunes? 99 cents each?

Now, my understanding of iTunes Plus is that it just adds all of the music on your library to your cloud and makes it legal. In other words, if you go out and buy another album in August, it's also covered. (That brings you down to around 25 cents per song). Suppose you go torrent Bob Dylan's entire discography. iTunes Plus seems to imply that those songs would likewise be covered (at least the ones they have on their network).

The package would also cover your daughter's music, as well as your girlfriend's music provided you put it all on your library. How much music do they have? You're already at 28 cents per song, and that number is only going to go down.

Thinking of this as buying the music all over again isn't entirely accurate. This is a data protection plan. How much would it cost to replace your music if a hard drive went out? Four years at $25 per year would cause you to break even against just buying it all on iTunes all over again. It's also a forgiveness plan for illegally downloaded music. Apple's smart enough to realize that can't sue everyone in the world who pirates music, and this is how they plan to get that money. They offer a $25/yr data protection plan for your music with no questions asked.

I don't understand the advantage of putting them on iTunes plus. If you want to back them up, burn them to a DVD or copy them to another harddrive.

Also why do CDs need to be involved? The only use for CDs anymore is for cars and obsolete music players. Even iTunes took the CD image out of their icon, because they don't want to be associated with the technology anymore.

I have 2721 songs total, ripped to iTunes from my CD collection, and purchased from iTunes. (still comes to roughly .00926 cents per song)

My GF has a couple of hundred songs that she imported from CDs or from her iTunes purchases. Her songs are all iTunes Plus already. My daughter has roughly 15 CDs worth of music plus another 5 or 6 iTunes gift cards worth of stuff.

And from their FAQ, the charge is a one time charge since everything they sell now is the DRM free stuff.

Lex,

I have all my itunes stuff on an external HDD for backup. The only point of putting them on CD would be to turn around and re-import them as MP3; so I could move the "locked" content to a non iOS device.

I keep all my music in a folder on my 32 GB USB stick, and backed up in places. One advantage is that USB transfer time is far faster than download or upload speeds. And it's free (other than the USB stick).

I'm assuming the locked content is songs bought through iTunes or another online store? That kinda sucks.

Yeah it is older stuff bought via iTunes. The newest of the purchases is the Nightmare Revisited.
