I get confused with these anymore. How does this work for e-readers? I can assume the closest book is the one I'm currently reading, but the page numbers are fuzzy, since the page breaks in the print-published book often fall mid-page when the e-book re-paginates based on font size. So there's no way to tell where the "real" page 13 starts, and the e-reader top of page 13 could be any number of places based on what size my text is.

I'd just take a guess, then.

You're such a snob, Khross. Write it out in whatever language it's in. You might be surprised at who could read it...we may have lurkers too who are smarter than all of us...(which could very well be since they are smart enough to just read and not comment, haha! )

13th page (only 12 chapters) and 13th line, although that really leaves me on page 14.

For the nearest book that actually has 13 chapters:

None in Spanish? I don't read it fluently, but I definitely know enough to where I could use a dictionary to figure it out.

I'm fluent in Spanish. I'm sure he means Klingon or Ebonics or something. ;)

I believe Ancient Greek is among the languages that Khross claims proficiency with.

I've been reading the mostly collected works of Ivan Cankar (a Slovenian writer). And, hell, I'm not even sure I can adequately translate this because a lot of the idiomatic expressions, metaphors, and such simply don't make sense to me or people I can ask about them.

Yeah, some things just don't translate. It's very funny when people try though...Maybe we have a Slovenian lurker who would get a good laugh?
You don't happen to have, by any chance, a book somewhere in your house in English with 13 chapters? That might help.

My entire family is Slovenian, but even my grandparents and their siblings boggle at some of the language in his writing.

So just translate it literally, so we can all share a chuckle at the strange idioms from other cultures, and the confusion they create.

It's like Slovengrish!

Hahaha I like that idea, Kaffis. Translate, Khross! :) Pick a passage with some of those boggling idioms and metaphors and translate it literally like Kaffis suggested...that would be fun.
Like my old Mexican boss used to tell me with all seriousness in his broken English: "Joo know, curiosity keeled thee dog!"

Something that I just got ...

Quote:
She had skillfully pacified life; she had taken so much care to avoid upheavals. She had cultivated an atmosphere of serene understanding, separating each person from the others. Her clothes were clearly designed to be practical, and she could choose the evening's film from the newspaper -- and everything was done in such a manner that each day should smoothly succeed the previous one. And a blind man chewing gum was destroying all this. Through her compassion Anna felt that life was filled to the brim with a sickening nausea.

That's Clarice Lispector from the short story "Love". It's the 13th paragraph.

I work with a Bosnian guy. I don't know if he speaks any Slovene, but Serbo-Croation is very closely related, at least. It wouldn't surprise me if they share a lot of idioms.

Most of the idiomatic expressions aren't problematic. Slovene was my first language, because that's the language the grandparents who raised for the first part of my life speak. Grandpa is pushing 95, and Grandma is 90; and even they boggle at some of the turns of phrase in Cankar's writing.
