I laud the social networking aims of Google because they're not Facebook, and Facebook because they're not Myspace, and Myspace because... If there's anything worth supporting Google over in this, it's that everyone needs to get a clue and realize that everything on the web is ephemeral, and that today's (perceived) multibillion dollar enterprise is tomorrow's bargain bin castoff from News Corp. Does anyone really think that Facebook has some kind of intrinsic value?

Social networking is like Socialism ... great until all the people get on board.

I use Facebook primarily for keeping tabs on people (family mostly) I know irl and don't get to see as often as I like. Thus it suits my needs.

I am fine with Google taking over the world, as long as I get an account.

Because my contacts are merged on my gmail account on my phone, my work contacts, family contacts, online (anonymous) contacts and personal contacts are all in one place (on my phone/gmail).

If it gets to a point where I'm forced to meld all of this into some kind of social media environment where I have to manage visibility among those different groups, I'm done with it. I'll go back to keeping my contacts on my SIM card (or a rolodex if necessary).

Google is really taking a risk here... they are opening a huge market gap for a sleek, minimalist email provider without tons of other baggage attached.

Lot of assumptions being tossed around, the biggest and likely most erroneous of which is the idea that Google is going to force you into joining.

I don't see it as a huge leap to assume that they won't streamline or otherwise optimize the gmail contacts to integrate into their new social network, and as we found with buzz, it might not be an opt-in kind of thing...

as long as it's an opt out kinda thing I won't change my email. I really like not having to change my e-mail. I don't use webmail, though. I use IMAP. don't know if that makes a difference in how these things affect me or not.

Might be worth looking into, if only because facebook's android implementation kinda sucks.

This makes for a crucial difference between Google+ and Facebook; on Facebook, you can have a completely private profile, which won’t even come up in Google’s search results or even Facebook search results (for people who aren’t your friends). On the other hand, to use Google+, you will at least need to make your full name and gender public, meaning people will be able to find you via Google+.

Google+ won't let you have private profiles. WTF are they thinking?

That being not Facebook is enough to win, even if you make all the same mistakes. Wonder who gave them that idea.

Everything about your profile can be private except for your name and gender. Big whoop.

I don't want my name and gender to be searchable. These things can be hidden on Facebook.

Ok, Lex.

Edit - and please show me where you can make your name private on Facebook, because I can't find that option.

You can make your profile private to public searches outside of Facebook where web crawlers go. I deactivated my Facebook about a month ago, because it sucks, so I can't look around it.

In response to Google+, the Google social network that's currently in a limited beta, Facebook is taking some dramatic steps. Facebook has blocked tools that would allow for easy migration to Google+ and have hired a PR firm to discredit Google+.

Blocking the Migration Tools
Facebook is, in many ways, the only threat to Google's empire on the web. As such, it's unsurprising that Google's new attempt at social would be seen as a big deal to Facebook – especially when it the new site bears such a striking resemblance to an improved version of Facebook. One of the great risks is that users will simply move all their contacts over to Google+ when it becomes publicly available.

To make sure this process isn't too easy, Facebook has blocked a Chrome extension called "Facebook Friend Exporter." Friend Exporter can be used to quickly import your friend information, include contact information and birthdays, to Gmail – and thus, eventually, to Google+. As Mohammad Monsour reported to CNET, "[Facebook] implemented a throttling mechanism that if you visit your ~5 friends in a short period of time, it will remove the email field." This prevents the extension from functioning. Others who have attempted to create similar export tools, including Rafael Laguna, have run into similar problems.

The PR Slam
Facebook isn't stopping at making the process difficult. It seems that the PR firm the company hired, Burson-Marsteller, is attempting to run a smear campaign against Google+. As reported by Chris Soghoian, a journalist who specializes in privacy issues, Burson-Marsteller approached him and three others requesting they publish stories about concerns with Google+ Circles privacy. Burson-Marsteller even offered to write the story for him and simply have him attach his name to give the story credibility.

This isn't the first time Burson-Marsteller has tried similar tactics. Earlier this year, employees of the company contacted several major outlets requesting that they investigate and publish stories about how Google is violating the privacy of its users. Despite the ensuing scandal, Burson-Marsteller refused to fire the employees who had made the smear efforts, and Facebook continued to use the company for its PR efforts.

Gotta love being open to competition and reciprocity (Facebook has had tools to import contacts from Gmail for ages). Anyways, I'm on there. Looks nice so far.

I also confirmed that my friend from high school who used to be on the Gmail team appears to now working on Google+

I really dig the new Youtube interface (and honestly, Google's entire new aesthetic). Anyone else using it? It requires Chrome right now I think but it's pretty sick.. Opt-in to the new design at:
