Doctor Who was one of my favorite TV shows for a brief period of time in my childhood (during the Tom Baker years), but I've long since stopped watching.
As someone interested in giving it another go - how should I begin? It seems most of what's available is streaming through Netflix, but it's a bit overwhelming, especially with the majority of it being broken into single 90+ minute episodes. Suggestions on at what point to jump in, and in what order to put things?

Start with the beginning of the revival. Netflix has this listed as simply Doctor Who (2005, 69 eps). The first episode is "Rose."

Once you get to S4:E15, "The Next Doctor," stop and look for the following "specials:"

"Planet of the Dead"
"Waters of Mars"
"The End of Time (Parts I and II)"

Then go back to the main series entry and resume with S5:E1, "The Eleventh Hour."

Cool, thanks.
That lines up pretty well with what I found when I Googled my question while waiting to hear back in this thread.

The internet wrote:
As a TOTAL beginner, I'd suggest you start with the 2005 reboot, and watch them in the order they aired. It's both easier to get a hold of, and more modern. Plus once you're caught up, you can easily watch the new episodes as they're released.

In addition, if you're enjoying the modern Doctor Who series, I'd recommend watching Torchwood as well; preferably in the sequence it aired, as there are tie-ins with Doctor Who.

However, if you subsequently wish to watch some of the more "landmark" classic episodes, I'd suggest you go for 2nd, 3rd or 4th doctor stories first; specifically those involving the Daleks or the Cybermen. The 4th Doctor's Genesis of the Daleks is a fantastic story, and introduced a recurring villain (who appears in the modern series), and the 3rd Doctor's Master storyline introduced the character (who also appears in the modern series), so is well worth checking out. On top of this some of the 2nd Doctor's stories are well worth watching; specifically the early Cybermen stories like Tomb of the Cybermen, and the 2nd Doctor's final story, War Games.

I'd agree with other commenters, though, that the modern reboot is a lot easier to get into than the classic series, as the classic series is a bit dated in places, and the low budget special effects are often a bit corny. However, if you can deal with that, and enjoy the modern series, then I'd highly recommend checking out some of the classic series as well.

As a side note, I can't believe I managed to watch all of the available Torchwood episodes without realizing it was a Doctor Who spinoff :psyduck:

Russell T. Davies talked about that in the Season 2 Doctor Who extras, when Torchwood is introduced

I'm re-watching with my wife and we're in the Martha phase now. She is smoking hot (and a good actress to boot!) Next episode up is Blink, she has no idea what's in store! /can'twait

That has been one of my favorites so far, and I've just started on season 4.

Martha was my least favorite companion, but she seemed to have some of my favorite episodes (Blink, Gridlock...)

Martha? Really? I like her, but don't care for Donna. Donna hits my "shrew" button.

/agree. While I understand Donna's character, she would drive me up the wall if we had to hang out for a day.

I didn't care for Donna in her first appearance. After she became a companion, however, she became my favorite of the RTD-era companions (Rose, Martha, Donna).

Incredibly minor spoilers, I guess, but I'll safeguard them behind the tag for Kirra.

Spoiler:
The reason for this is simple: she was the Doctor's friend. Never attracted to him. As such, she was his conscience, his grounding.

I liked Rose and Martha, but they both shared a very large flaw: they fell in love with the Doctor, and treated him like a god. The Doctor is not perfect, he is just a very good man trying his best to help. Donna recognized his flaws, loved him as a friend, and wasn't afraid to smack sense into him when he veered off the road.
