You poor bastards. I've got three small town small business gourmet icecream shops within a 5 minute radius of my house, one within casual walking distance. I've never even considered going to DQ or McDonald's for icecream.

Frozen custard > ice cream

Leon's - not close to where I lived growing up, but next to what used to be the county fairgrounds, and I was in 4-H, as was my sister, so I've enjoyed Leon's at least a dozen times.

Culver's - a more recent establishment, it's a chain, but the founders were University of Wisconsin - Oshkosh graduates, so there's a 'local chain' feel to going there.

Also, butterburgers ftw.

(I just returned from a Shari's where I had Diet Coke (+refill) + Mozzarella Sticks (with side of Buffalo sauce) + Nacho Fries (with side of ranch and sour cream on top) and Blackberry Shake. Nom nom nom)

Just a small nitpick, but gourmet icecream and softserve icecream are not the same. They are both awesomely good in their own way, for different reasons.

I think the last time I was at a McD's was almost 2 years ago when I dropped Mookhow off at the airport up here...

I dont do fast food like at all, except for a few special times (Wendy's Spicy Chicken and BK's Rodeo Cheeseburgers are yummy)

Wendy's new fries suck compared to their old ones. I absolutely hate what they've done to their food.

Go to a different McDonald's for ice cream? Its not like there's not one on every other corner really.

I agree. These changes started when they were bought out by the group that owns Arby's. I have never liked anything at Arby's and Wendy's is starting to get that way for me too.

I used to occasionally eat their Chili, and their Chicken Nuggets, and even the occasional Frosty (when it was a Frosty, not 'Chocolate/Vanilla/Strawberry' soft serve ice cream crap.

Fortunately, it looks like the Arby's disaster might be near an end... at least the ownership is changing again...
http://curiouscapitalist.blogs.time.com ... ore-arbys/

Maybe they'll restore Wendy's to what it used to be.... I could care less what they do with Arbys...

Oh, and it looks like Five Guys will be opening in my neighborhood soon...

Glad its not just me. I doubt its the Arby's connection that's made their food suck. Its the parent company. As long as that parent company owns Wendy's, I think its going to continue to suck.

I don't know what they've done with their meat, but its awful and dry now. It used to be flavorful and moist and delightfully greasy. I miss that. There was nothing like it out there.

At least I still have In n Out.

I actually like the changes at Wendy's, especially the fries and the bacon on the junior bacon cheeseburger...it's actually crispy bacon now instead of the soggy chewy stuff it used to be.
I don't like the Taco Bell changes...I miss the old bean burritos...the new ones are too thick and pasty.

I went to Wendy' for lunch today, just to re-affirm, and unfortunately I found that it's worse than I thought.

Frosty's are gone altogether (along with any incentive I might have to ever go there again). They have been replaced with various flavors of "Frosty Shake's", which are runny, fake tasting crap.

I also ordered a double with cheese, and like Arafys said, the meat was crappy, cardboard tasting.

And worse than that, the frickn' burger was $4.99 by itself (not a combo)... I didn't notice this before I ordered I would have just driven through and not ordered. The total for my 2 patty burger and small shake was almost $9 with tax.

No way I'll be going back....

Gourmet ice cream is really not "gourmet" at all; it's just hard ice cream with more flavors. Soft-serve is a different style.

The worst ice cream I ever had was at Coldstone Creamery; they insist on slopping it all around and want you to pick a mix or something to go in it and so on and so forth. They wouldn't just give me the damn cone. I told my wife I'd never go back there.

As for Arby's it sucks goat balls and always has. I haven't noticed anything wrong with Wendy's, though.

Here in Texas, if you want really atrocious, greasy fast food, we have Jack in the Box... and... Whataburger, which sounds like "water burger". You have to go to one just once just to experience the hideousness of it.

The original Wendy's fries were awesome, and horrible. If they were fresh, then they were awesome, if they weren't they were horrible. Therein lies the problem. They had such a short shelf life, that often if you waited until you got home to eat them, it was too late. And often they were too old when they handed them to you.

original Wendy's fries when very fresh > new Wendy's fries
* > original Wendy's fries when more than 5 minutes old.

I don't blame them for the change at all.

Hey, bro... you're talking to me... about food.

If I say something it gourmet, please assume it is.

I disagree about gourmet ice cream. Such a thing exists, but you don't go around trusting the label.

As for Coldstone Creamery, I'm not going to tell you you're wrong about whether you like it or not, but it's pretty silly to expect them to just put it on a cone and give it to you. The preparation they do to the ice cream, where they knead it around to manipulate the texture, is the signature of the restaurant, and the reason you go to a Coldstone place. It's like getting bent out of shape when you look on the menu at a restaurant and they've got chicken cordon bleu, but they won't throw one of the breasts in a fryer to serve you fried chicken.

There is a Cold Stone over in Starkville and I love it. Throw some of the mint chocolate cake ice cream into a sugar waffle bowl? Yes please.

I wouldn't have been bent out of shape if I'd known that before I went there. Unfortunately all I heard was raving about how great it was; no one mentioned the slopping it all over the place. When I order it, and then I find out you do all kinds of stuff to it I wasn't expecting and which they don't bother to mention before they just start doing it, yeah, I'm going to get bent out of shape, at least enough that I won't go back there again. It's more like going into a place that claims to specialize in chicken, wanting to order fried chicken, and then discovering the only damn thing they serve is Cordon Bleau.

Hmm. I suppose I can get behind that, though you must've run into different sorts of praise recommending it than I have experienced. Everybody I hear raving about Coldstone is enthusiastic to explain what they do in the process of gushing.

In any case, it's a shame that's soured you on it, rather than simply armed you with the proper expectations for a next time.
