Bringing home food last night, we had a problem. In the parking lot, I had a sudden, paralyzing jolt of pain in my lower back, shooting down left leg. Pain has persisted. Could barely sleep much last night, especially after I got home and the ibuprofen wore off. Had some difficulty walking, too.

Mom has been joking that I've inherited Dad's back problems.

I just know it hurts and I want it to stop hurting. >_<

Look at sciatica, that is what is sounds like.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sciatica

Compressed nerve, pain comes on suddenly.

Rest, aspirin, maybe a chiropractor visit.

Asprin or ibuprofen.

Do not lay in bed, nor do new vigorous exercise.

Back extension exercises (McKenzie style is my favorite) may help. Look here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBOp-ugJbTQ for a demonstration.

If not better in a week or so, get help. 8/10 will get better on their own in a couple weeks, but will show they are getting better by about a week.

Thankfully, my father is a PA, and has told me to bother him tonight if it doesn't improve. (which it has, a little, but that's the ibuprofen talking)

I'll defer to SG, she is the professional here.

As a long time back pain sufferer, I will also attest to SG's advice being sound.

When I have flare-ups with my lower back, it seems the best therapy is 'light activity. nothing strenuous, nothing that causes additional pain. Avoid too much heat (more inflamation). Avoid laying in bed, as it will just atrophy and make getting back up and moving around all the worse.

Anti-inflammatory meds and 'light' activity seems to work best for me.

As a person whose parents were given the choice "we can fix his back, or he can walk"; and who has several friends with spinal disks that are ruptured or in need of surgery... I must implore you, do not take any back pains lightly.

Do not try and self diagnose or look up what you think may be wrong. Make sure you have a professional look at your back and take as good a care of your back as you can.

Unless there are leaps and bounds in cybernetics quickly it is the only one you will ever have.

I was just recently in a physical therapy class for lower back/sciatica pain. We basicly did a series of floor exercises to increase our core muscle support (abdomen) as well as some strengthening exercises via weight machines and resistance bands. All of the exercises are meant to develop the core muscle (abdomen) support and alleviate the pressure on the sciatica nerve. After many years of pain, just a few weeks doing these exercises have helped me immensely. I haven't had any lower back pain in well over two months, and the numbing in my thigh caused by the sciatic nerve being pinched has gone almost completely away! I am continuing to do these exercises at home, to maintain and improve my core muscle support.
