Loved it!
I could go on about all the things I liked, but then I'd realize that I'd listed everything about this movie.

It was pretty much exactly what I was expecting to see in a pre-Avengers Captain America movie. And that is in no way a bad thing.

This. I squeed. (I remember the days when Steve was an artist on his own comic book, sometime in the 80's, as his day job.)

I particularly enjoyed Schmitt's initial reaction to Cap's appearance in his base.

Hydra was so hardcore that the Nazis wanted to distance themselves from them. That's evil. All his storm troopers masks kinda make it look like they are all in to S&M though. "Submit! YOU DIDN"T UTTER THE SAFTEY WORD!"

You're not aware of your WWII History then....

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/442nd_Regi ... ombat_Team

Quote:
The 442nd Regimental Combat Team (Japanese: 第442連隊戦闘団) of the United States Army, was an all Japanese American unit. They fought primarily in Europe during World War II, beginning in 1944.[2] The families of many of its soldiers were subject to internment. The 442nd was a self-sufficient fighting force, and fought with uncommon distinction in Italy, southern France, and Germany. The unit became the most highly decorated regiment in the history of the United States armed forces, including 21 Medal of Honor recipients. The motto of the 442nd Regimental Combat Team was “Go for Broke.”

Among which was Senator Daniel Inouye ....
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Inouye

Quote:
On April 21, 1944, Inouye was grievously wounded while leading an assault on a heavily-defended ridge near Terenzo called Colle Musatello. The ridge served as a strongpoint along the strip of German fortifications known as the Gothic Line, which represented the last and most dogged line of German defensive works in Italy. As he led his platoon in a flanking maneuver, three German machine guns opened fire from covered positions just 40 yards away, pinning his men to the ground. Inouye stood up to attack and was shot in the stomach; ignoring his wound, he proceeded to attack and destroy the first machine gun nest with hand grenades and fire from his M1 Thompson submachine gun. After being informed of the severity of his wound by his platoon sergeant, he refused treatment and rallied his men for an attack on the second machine gun position, which he also successfully destroyed before collapsing from blood loss.

As his squad distracted the third machine gunner, Inouye crawled toward the final bunker, eventually drawing within 10 yards. As he raised himself up and cocked his arm to throw his last grenade into the fighting position, a German inside fired a rifle grenade that struck him on the right elbow, severing most of his arm and leaving his own primed grenade reflexively "clenched in a fist that suddenly didn't belong to me anymore".[8] Inouye's horrified soldiers moved to his aid, but he shouted for them to keep back out of fear his severed fist would involuntarily relax and drop the grenade. As the German inside the bunker reloaded his rifle, Inouye managed to pry the live grenade from his useless right hand and transfer it to his left. As the German aimed his rifle to finish him off, Inouye managed at last to toss the grenade off-hand into the bunker and destroy it. He stumbled to his feet and continued forward, silencing the last German resistance with a one-handed burst from his Thompson before being wounded in the leg and tumbling unconscious to the bottom of the ridge. When he awoke to see the concerned men of his platoon hovering over him, his only comment before being carried away was to gruffly order them return to their positions, since, as he pointed out, "nobody had called off the war".

I think my point was more along the lines of, "their diversified crew is unlikely, as minorities like blacks and especially Japanese were segregated." Then again, Cap is a swell guy, so I'm sure he doesn't see why it would be a problem. So, maybe it makes sense after all. They have a Irish/Scottish guy, A British guy, a French guy, a Black guy, and Japanese guy. No Mexican guy though. Racism! Sometimes it seems like they go out of their way to make sure everyone is represented.

Cap'n A is a light-hearted movie, I just don't think we should forget some things about our past. That shouldn't stop anyone from enjoying the movie. It's pretty good.

While I agree, its done to set Cap aside/above the prejudices of the day to let him be a 'modern' superhero.

Incidentally, I've seen it suggested that in order to psychologically distance ourselves from the Nazi ideology of the "superior Aryan race", culturally the US had to embrace a more multiethnic view--when we defined Nazism as 'everything evil' then anything it valued we (as a cultural collective) had to become the opposite--that the Third Reich may have been the single biggest factor in the civil rights movement.

Not really, both Captain America and Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos were products of the 60s and to a certain extent, the civil rights movement had a huge effect on comics back then. The HC were a slightly multi-racial group even back then. Dum Dum Dugan, mostly Irish, Gabe Jones, the black guy, Dino Manelli, the Italian guy, Percival, the Brit, and I think I spotted Izzy Cohen, first Jewish "superhero"

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sgt._Fury_ ... _Commandos

Loved the movie, outstanding example of what taking the heart of the material and only making a few changes, those even worked.

Comics always seem a bit liberal, imo. I agreed with them more than too, so I don't remember minding it. I remember authors frequently taking the opportunity to soapbox in someway or another on this or that.

Wow, cool stuff about Inouye. I knew about Japanese-Americans fighting in Italy (so, I wasn't surprised during the movie), but I didn't know about the Senator. Heck, I didn't even realize he was still alive, much less serving in the Senate. He's kind of one of these icons from my childhood (and that was a long time ago!).

Huh, was also gonna say that I didn't think there were any African-American ground units in Italy, but I guess there was one: The 92nd Infantry Division. Heck, now I want to look for the guy's arm patch.

Just saw the flick this weekend. It was fun, entertaining.

The fact that a regiment of Japanese, black, or other non-white American soldiers became highly decorated during WWII speaks highly of those soldiers, not our society. They have those medals for the same reason the white soldiers have them: they were exceptional fighting men.

Speaking of minorities in WW2, the trailer for Red Tails, the Lucas-produced Tuskegee Airmen movie coming this winter, was released last week. Just linking the new thread here rather than hijacking Captain America.

Finally got to see it this weekend. Freakin fantastic. Out of all the superhero movies so far, this was the the one that gave me the feeling of seeing a "hero". Well done in every aspect.

Spoiler:
My only beef with the movie is how downplayed "the shield" is. "Oh, so what's this little piece of metal down here on the bottom shelf under this pile of scrap.... like it's in a bargain bin at some swap meet?"

"Oh that? Yeah, it's kind of cool. I guess. It, like, absorbs vibrations. Won't dent. Made of Virbanium. It's a rare metal, I think."

"Did you tell him it's not actually vibranium, but an adamantium vibranium alloy that we created as a fluke and cannot be replicated ever again? That that thing is the most valuable and rare piece of metal in the known universe? That that piece of metal is truly indestructible, and not "mostly indestructible" like all the other super rare metals, including adamantium?"

"No I forgot to mention that."

This was the second of the three movies I watched, and was the second in terms of ranking. I'm not a fan of Captain Boyscout generally. He's too wholesome and whatnot. However, as an origin movie, this was pretty well done.

Action scenes were fun to watch, shot well, and the badassness of Cap was well showcased. Hugo Weaving though... awesome. I didn't know much about Red Skull besides... well, he's a dude with a skull, and its red. He was suitably unhinged and creepy. Howard Stark? Awesome. (How do I know you don't 'fondue' with Stark eh? Dude, its just bread and cheese. Really? Man, I suck.)

I can't wait for Avengers. I'm genuinely excited for it now.

I saw it over the weekend and...it was good, but seriously, Iron Man 2 was better than this.
