Watch out for these guys and other repair shops... can't say I am too surprised.

This is common practice in a wide variety of businesses. The business can project a facade of honesty by having an ethics policy and never explicitly telling their employees to commit fraud, but then setting sales targets that require you to commit fraud to meet. If you're not a fraudster, you get fired and replaced with someone who is. Then when they get caught they can blame the employees because hey, we never told them to steal and it's even against policy.

And if you're struggling to keep your job without playing some kind of con, you can't tell your boss that the other guys are cheating because they don't want to hear it.

There have been plane crashes and major structural failures because of this type of pressure. Jiffy Lube is small potatoes.

Hey, it's your decision and responsibility to decide how much fuel we load onto the plane. It's your responsibility to decide how much support this structure needs. Just be aware that if you load more than X amount of fuel or spend more than Y on structural reinforcement, you'll never get promoted again and we'll look for a reason to fire you.

This is exactly why we need regulations. Deregulation doesn't get you a better product, it gets you a shittier product and better lies.

Right, because then the concrete supplier can hire a lobbyist and fund some campaigns to ensure that everything is overengineered by 300% (by law!) over reasonable safety margins.

They still do it today.

I had my oil changed at a jiffy lube a few months ago. The guy walked up to me in the waiting area with a filthy, black air conditioning filter, and suggested it needed replacing.

I didn't say a word. I Just walked out to my car (hood was already up) and pulled out the almost brand new one I had just installed and showed it to him...

He had a serious oh-shit moment. He mumbled something about confusing me for another customer and walked off...

I had a little chat with the manager before I left, knowing full well that it won't make a bit of difference...

Heheh, I had nearly the opposite experience years back. When I went to chat with the mechanic, I noticed a filthy air filter sitting next to their computer and said, "Ahh, that must be the one you use for 'demonstration purposes', eh?" She chuckled and said, "Nope, that's yours." I replaced it with a K&N that night.

I went to Jiffy lube once! The tried the air filter trick on me, too stupid to notice that I have a custom high flow cool air system on my jeep, I asked them to show me where they wanted to install the air filter. they were at a loss.
They also tried for the trany flush this was 2 days after my transmission guy had replaced my Ujoints and done a full services on my rig (he's a friend that has earned my trust).
Needless to to say I got an oil change lube and filter and nothing else.
I found a small local oil change place that's actually honest if they see something odd they tell me they don't even offer to fix it any more, but they know my rig ( they see it every other month)

Anyone else take their car to the dealer? I'm getting oil changes for under $20 when I buy a package of 4, and they let me split them between cars.

I take my car to BMW for oil changes all the time. Sadly, it is significantly more than it is for me to take my SOs car to her dealership.

So the people who got screwed while he was getting that reputation are basically SOL?

Aizle, in the utopia you live in, is life really perfect for everyone?

no one gets hurt? no one every makes a bad investment? no one every buys losing lottery tickets? no one ever has bad things happen?

To answer a little more seriously, the people who used the guy without a reputation while he was building a reputation weighed the risks of him earning a bad reputation on their work against the price of the bid he submitted.

Jiffy Lube has been an *** company for 25 years. They ruined the engine in a car my mom owned way back in 1987 by putting the wrong oil filter in it. I don't remember all the details, but I don't recall her being too successful in getting much satisfaction from it.

I guess doing it yourself may be a consistent exception.



I changed my own for years; when we moved to CO a peddler showed up at the door selling discount packages to the local shop. When I told him I changed my own, he offered me 6 oil changes for $78. I took the deal, and surprisingly I like the shop.

What do you guys do with the old oil after you change your own oil? Don't you need a special license or something like that to dispose of it?

The bigger problem is that this is the 21st century, and it's fairly easy to fake yourself up a reputation.
