Some people are going to love it, other people will turn their noses up at it, but we're all going to be talking about it.

When's the last time anyone has been able to claim that about a gaming laptop?

Interesting editorializing and scrying from the Gawker network... It's a long article, and I'm not on my PC, so I won't copy/paste.

Summarized, Kotaku/Gizmodo are suggesting that PC gaming needs to move towards standardized hardware platforms to stay competitive with consoles, and that the PC would benefit from such a move in its quest to remain relevant in the face of Apple's encroachment on the increasing share of laptop/netbook types. They're praising Razer for taking the initiative and risk in creating something with the potential for strong branding while others like HP are removing themselves from the market.

I'm not positive I agree with all of it, and even if I did, some of it's certainly news/prognostication I don't want to hear...

Well, whatever it's future, at $2800, it's not going to become any kind of standard PC for the masses.

I think it will be popular with a similar niche crowd as the Macbook Pros. at $2800, it's a few hundred cheaper than a 17" MBP, and has a nicer processor/graphics card to boot.

I'm not sure why knowledgeable people would get a Macbook Pro now instead of a Macbook Air.

At the 15-17 inch scale, the pros are much, much more powerful machines than the Air, especially in the graphics department.

For games or video editing I could see that, but MacBook airs are not slow. I have one and it does all normal tasks quickly and can have many programs running at the same time. They have i7s. I would bet your 'much more' is only a factor of 2, which is unnoticeable for most things web-related. There's many cheap laptops with large screens and I don't see how that's a large benefit. 13 inches on the larger MacBook Airs is not bad if you are concerned about screen size. I actually bought the 11 inch though because I prefer small screens.

Like you said, it depends what you're doing. But your first statement was that "you don't know why any knowledgeable person would get a pro over an air", and I'm pointing out why.

Increased screen size, much faster graphics (discrete graphics cards), significantly faster processor (even 2x can be quite a lot more processing power), and then there's the built in optical drive.

The airs are great computers- and probably what I'll end up getting- but there are definitely reasons to get a pro over an air.

Pretty cool, though for that money you could get a 17" Alienware with a true quad core i7 processor and a much faster 580M video card so I don't know how much of a true gaming laptop I would call that, better CPU & GPU > gimmicky 2nd screen and customization buttons IMO when it comes to gaming
