Well, it happened - I got laid off from my job this week.

This could either be a rant or a rave, really, and I'm leaning toward rave, because frankly I was hating the job and the position I'd been stuck in after two mergers/acquisitions. And it was a horrible round of cuts throughout the administrative/corporate (support, non-billable) staff. My former co-worker called it a "gutting". So, I'm not taking it personally. They axed people with 25, 30 years of experience with the company. I had 13 years with various incarnations of the company.

And it's funny, but I've never been laid off. Of course, I've never really worked for the private sector on a permanent basis until I took this job. Spent years in college, grad school, working summer jobs for municipalities, or temp jobs that I needed to tide me over. So, I'm one of those 50-something guys who wakes up one day and says, What the hell do I do now? At least, in a roundabout fashion.

So, I will come back and rant occasionally as I work my way through this. I'm thinking career-change (out of tech), or maybe a mix of things. First I have to sit down with the family and take stock, figure out what we can live on, what we can do without. This should be an interesting time.

Best of luck to you. I know it's not easy. Been through it a few times already, and I expect to go through it again.

Good luck Aethien.

Having been laid off before, it sucks, but you will find work again and hopefully in a better position than where you were before.

Sorry, Aethien. Good luck! I got out of tech and now I'm waitressing, haha! I certainly hope you find something better than that. Maybe this will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

Thanks for the encouragement, folks. I actually said to my wife the other night that I bet I'd make a good waiter. At least I wouldn't take my work home with me.

But, yeah, looking into other things, maybe something creative, since I do live in Hollywood, more or less. Maybe part-time work, giving me time to write.

And, no, Hop, I don't work for BofA! Er, didn't. Just a large faceless engineering corporation that lives off of contracts from local municipalities, etc.

Sheesh, sorry, Leshani - didn't notice that you had asked something. Now that I don't spend all day at work on this board, I miss things ... :P

Civil and environmental engineering - drinking water treatment, wastewater, brownfields recovery - pretty much anything that a municipality will pay for.

And, thanks, Jasmy!
