This is a rental storage unit?

Is there any obligation for the property owners to manage infestations?

Yes. No. We talked with them yesterday and told them the situation and they said if we wanted to spray/dust they were ok with it. It's not climate controlled.

Well, not sure if it will help....

I had pretty good luck with a minor ant infestation a few years ago using Ortho Home Defense.

I sprayed it around the edges of the foundation, and haven't seen an ant since.

I think it's supposed to work on Spiders too, but I have no idea if it will chase off your Black Widows.

Put some gasoline (diesel is best, but unleaded works) in an open container, feed styrofoam into it while stirring constantly until it reaches the appropriate viscosity for your desired application.

When we had black widows in our garage my dog just ate them all. The only reason I even knew we had them was because I caught her licking them off the wall and was wondering wtf she was eating...

LK, even if the landlord is willing to "take care of it", you and NF will still need to go thru your goods carefully and clean and rid the spiders. If landlord is gonna spray or bomb the place, you'll have to clean that off your goods as well.

If it can be put off a little, wait for colder weather and then pull everything out and go thru it all. Vacuum, and place back neatly to where you can give the place a spraying once per month without hassles. Dust around the outside, and maybe spray around all the doors, etc. Caulk the holes up during the winter. If it has ventilation hole(s), make sure they are screened well. Usually a small screen like a window, overlayed with a rodent screen to keep rats and pests out.

Be aware, in my experience, black widows form a breeding ground. Just because you kill the ones you can see doesn't mean they will remain gone. They usually pick an area and stay there unless completely driven out/killed.

And by all means, don't leave any shoes laying around. Check them before you put them on. I had a friend who kept a pair of slip ons on his deck, and he was bitten by a black widow in his shoe. Caused some sickness and a bad spot on his foot that took a while to heal.

It's rare these days, but I saw a guy come in the area hospital that was bitten by one. It shut down his ability to breathe, and nearly caused his death.

Thank you Sam, that is good advice. I really don't want to get bitten by a black widow, nor do I want anyone in my family to get bitten.

1) half a dozen spider specific bomb set off in the space all at once.
2) Vent out the place for 24 hours.
3) walk into the place in full protective gear with 2 cans of spider specific insect sprays (overall, boots, mittens, cap with hoodie over it, gas mask and goggles)
4) Spray any spiders you see, just to be sure, until they are nothing but a white foamy ball of insect spray.
5) randomly spray the exsisting webs with foam so any new comers touching the web will die.
5) rince and repeat as needed.

^^^ Thats what I did with my garage and after the 2nd time, they got the point and left our place alone ^^^

My wife hates spiders. She approved of the napalm solution.

I personally prefer to remain a giant pussy in regards to spiders...

Would rather some large paired man take care of them for me

Note from a friend of mine

=======================================

Close Encounters -

It was a bit warm in the South Bay today, so James and I went for a nice cool walk along the bay levees near Twin Creeks. The plan was to make a large loop so we end up back where we started but our map is more of a sketch than an actual map.

We walked along trying to get around to the other side of the impenetrable wetlands where the car is parked. In the distance, we can see bikes riding along the levee in the direction we need to go, so there should be a way to get there, but the levee we are on is not exactly heading that way, and then we see a side path that looks like it is a viable shortcut to the levee we need to be on. It looks fairly well travelled with bike tracks and footprints, so off we go.

We walked along the new path, enjoying the cool breeze and the various birds and the approaching sunset, and the path starts to get a bit narrower. Then it starts to run through intermittent patches of some very tall, sturdy, dry grass-type of plant (never a botanist around when you need one). And the patches of the tall grassy plant get taller, and thicker, and the path gets narrower. I'm in the lead walking along and I noticethat the grass has the occasional spider web, and ick, every once in a while I walk through one, but I 'm not seeing any spiders, so it's cool.

We get to a clear section of trail, and we can see that the other levee is close and it sure looks like our trail intersects it. The intersection appears to be just beyond a long stretch of the grassy plant. The trail gets even narrower as it goes through this patch, and the grass is even taller and thicker, but there are still bike tracks and footprints on the trail, so we push onward.

I walk a few paces into the grass - now taller than I am - and there I see it, right at eye level - a large black spider hanging on the grass! I stopped dead in my tracks, and I notice another large black spider just on the opposite side of the trail, and a few more beyond it, and one in the grass right next to my shoulder! I think I teleported behind James, because the next thing he knew he had point and I had him in a death grip from the back, and I don't remember going past him.

We immediately retreated to the clear area on the path, and we carefully examined the pathway ahead. It was full of spiders, big black spiders with very round abdomens with red hourglass markings. We darn near wandered into a black widow colony. I had no idea they hunted in grass like that!

James patiently waited while I had an attack of the heebie-jeebies, and then we turned around and went back the way we came, a bit more cautiously through the tall grass this time, although we didn't see any more black widows.

Makes me wonder, though. What happened to the people that left the bike tracks and footprints on the trail? After all, the spider colony grass is *very* thick and *very* tall....

You're not alone Kirra, a lot of people have that kind of reaction.

This is my wife's opinion. She likes me to smush (or napalm) the spiders and any other creepy crawly bug above the size of an ant, as well. Unfortunately there are times when I'm not home and times when I do not want to instantly drop what I'm doing in order to go deal with the shrieking in the kitchen.

The last time, she succeeded in dealing the ferocious spider, or whatever it was, without any help. Then I was informed that while the beast was slain, it would have been much nicer if her "knight in shining armor" had battled this daunting foe.

I told her that knights usually slay dragons, not tiny insects, and to let me know if there was a dragon in the kitchen.

I got "the look" for my trouble.

There is currently a quarter sized spider in it's web hanging from the side of my garage. I took a chewed up zucchini plant leaf that was covered in some sort of bugs and flung them into the web.

About 15 bugs were instantly trapped in he web, and it was awesome watching Mr. Spider cocoon them up one by one for dining on later.

Spiders are awesome and are our friends.

Foamy shall henceforth be named Renfield, and must call his wife Mistress. He shall dutifully fear her awesome Vampiric power and desire it for himself. Refusal to do her bidding shall be impossible, and should he attempt it he won't be allowed to play with the spiders.
