I agree entirely, that is basically my point. Right now we have Netflix/Hulu streaming at that price point, and people have responded to it. However, it does not appear that will be the case for long, pushing people back to piracy. Personally, I'm just getting kind of tired of watching the industry make things worse for the consumer and shooting itself in the foot at the same time.

Yeah, until tv/movie selection is on par with physical discs then I will have a gripe about it too. I'll still pay for streaming, as my watching habit consists of 99% streaming. But the few things I can't (/won't legally) stream, I have to get on disc.

Netflix needs to make more lucrative offers to expand their streaming database. Not say "Oh well, sucks to be you. Bye Starz!" It will cost a bit of money, but you have to spend money to make money. And that is certainly the case here.

I, too, care less about "It's not exactly blu ray quality" as I do having the selection.

I got netflix for the streaming. I can't be bothered to care about the dvd stuff. I don't get all the angst really.

I wonder about that though with ISPs imposing all these bandwidth caps and HD videos being pretty bandwidth intensive, so far this month i'm at 56gb out of my 250gb cap, now i'm not close obviously, but i'm also not a heavy streamer of movies, or at least not this month since I just moved and have been too busy unpack to watch movies.

Either way it's completely dumb for them to split it like this, all they are going to do is piss off users and lose people cause it will be a pain in the you know what you have to search on two different sites just to find a movie which may or may no be on streaming and or disk.

It's like taking a step backwards, instead of everything being nicely integrated it's now going to be separated and clunky.

I agree, a definite step backwards in convenience. They seem to be making all the wrong choices lately. Not a good play, with as many people fighting to gain ground in the streaming market as there are.

I don't know. I would never have ordered DVD rentals by mail, even if it had been available here. It's far easier and faster to go to a nearby rental place (RIP Blockbuster.) I don't want to rely on the mail for anything. And I don't know people who plan out their movie watching. If I am going to watch something, it's going to be on the spur of the moment, and immediately. I never understood the appeal of this service. Of course, Netflix never brought that service to Canada at all. Streaming is all they ever made available here.

There are zero rental stores where I live. One by one they all went out of business and were replaced with these stupid kiosks that are limited to a handful of new releases.
It's Netflix or nothing around here.

If Netflix really wants to compete in the streaming market, it needs to add a Hulu-esque option for selecting resolution...

Often, I don't want to watch an HD stream, and it eats up a lot of my bandwidth allotment. With Hulu, at least, I can select a lower res if I want one. Or, for that matter, select HD and require a bit more buffering if my internet connection is slow.

Oh, I'm the exact opposite, I love having a queue to add films to. A lot of times I like to watch an actor's body of work, or a director's, which is really nice. As well, I get a lot of obscure film recommendations which fell prey to the "what was the name of that film so-and-so recommended" at the video store. Being able to pull your phone out and add it to your queue instantly is very convenient.

Oh well at least I get free Gamefly out of the deal, hopefully the titles they have aren't as bad as their streaming service options for movies (I don't want to keep getting Gran Turismo 1 because it's their latest and greatest)

I had this same sentiment for a long time. But once I actually tried it out for a while, I was completely hooked. The queue actually helped me remember the movies I'd wanted to watch or heard about. Read a post here about a cool movie, hop onto netflix and add it to the queue. The selection of films they have is simply not possible for a local brick & mortar store to keep up with and be profitable. If all you watch is mainstream block busters, than a local store is fine, but if you like anything off the beaten path, Netflix had them beat cold.

I was being somewhat facetious and a tech hipster. It takes physical exertion to use, buy, move around, and so on.

That's kind of how I felt before Netflix actually, but between the brick & mortar video rental stores all dying and the ridiculous costs for renting movies from them I quickly ended up loving them, brick & mortar new release rental, $5/night. Netflix I was paying $18/month for 2 disks out so I was probably at the peak cycling 20 disks a month, plus streaming on top. The other reason I like Netflix and the disk service is anime, I never saw anime at a brick & mortar store and anime is still somewhat limited in streaming, though it's slowly getting better, there's a lot of anime on disks however.

Well, my doctor did say I need more exercise...
