Years ago when we were roomies, Hannibal and I had a message on our answering machine that, to this day, remains my favorite:

You have reached the apartment of (Hannibal's voice) Hannibal and (my voice) Foamy). If you would leave your name and message after the beep, there will be much rejoicing.

(Several friends voices including ours voiced with the same inflection and intonation as in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.)

Yaaaaaaay.

I guess I would be remiss if I didn't post my current home phone message. Numerous callers, both people we know and first time callers to our home, have commented in their message how funny they find the following message:

"Hello, you have reached Foamy and Oonagh. We're not at home right now, but please leave your name and number after the beep..."

(Me voicing a beeeeeeeeep)

*short pause*

"Ok, that wasn't it. Here it comes..."

*answering machine beep*

My gripe about people leaving messages is that they never leave enough info. If you say 'Hi, it's me, call me' and my phone is turned off or I'm out of signal when the call is placed I may have no idea who called or when. And the phone distorts voices so I can't call 'me' back, nor do I care, since I have no idea what the call was about. And anyway, the call may not even have been for me!

A proper message goes like this:
"Hey Taamar, it's Laura. It's around 2 on Wednesday and I was wondering if I can borrow your lawnmower tomorrow. Gimme a call, you have my number. Thanks!"

If your call isn't important about to leave a message like that then it's not important enough for me to care.

I'm guilty of being one of those "it's me" voicemail leaverers....I just assume that with cell phone technology that the date and time stamp as well as the caller ID tagged to everyone's voicemail when they leave one.

If you leave me a voicemail saying "Hey, it's me, gimme a call" it'll drive me effin' crazy until I know about WTF you're calling. So while yes, this is a good way to get me to return your call, I'm going to be very pissy and snippy when I do.

I concur with Taamar's idea of a 'proper message.'

Leaving you a detailed message like "Hey moose, it is about 11:30 on Wed morning, we are going to be going to breakfast tomorrow at xxx time. You are invited gimme a call." does not even get an IM saying "meh" half the time.

Only if the phone is connected to the network at the time the message is left. I have no signal at work, so as I drive away I suddenly get all the texts from the day (timestamped as of the moment they reached my phone) and a few voicemails with no record of my phone having received a call. And suppose you and Kirra call me one afternoon... and one of you leaves a message saying 'Don't call, you'll wake me' and the other leaves one saying 'call me immediately, it's an emergency' and neither of you leaves your name?

My most recent messages were:
"Hey Dad, this is Alfie (he has three kids, I'm the only girl, but he mistook me for my brother once, so I follow the protocol). It's 2:30 on Saturday, please call me as soon as you can regarding my car. This is not an emergency."

"Mary, this is your OTHER daughter, just having a sh**y week and looking to vent. It's Saturday morning and I'm on my way to work, I'll call you on my drive home if I remember. Or something."


Actually, that not only demonstrates proper message leaving, it tells you a lot about my relationship with my parents.

Yeah that makes sense...my iPhone attaches dates, times, numbers and everything to voicemails whether I had my phone off at the time or was out of signal range or whatever...kind of dumb of me to assume that everyone else had the same capabilites on their phones I guess.

And yeah, that does say a lot about your relationship with your parents, lol.

The intersection of two threads:

"Good morning, this is *Taamar* with the orange '05 Focus with clutch work; it's 9:30 Tuesday morning and I'm calling to see where things stand. Please call me back, (xxx)xxx-xxxx. thank you."

I usually just call close acquaintances back rather than listening to their messages. Odds are they are going to repeat whatever of import (if anything) to me when I call them anyway. Most people who call me and leave voice mail need my feedback on some issue and sometimes my phone is on silent and in the other room and I just miss them.

My brother will text me before he calls me and my parents will have my brother text me (or dad will text me himself) before they leave a message.
