Cast a Deadly Spell. Little-seen made-for-HBO supernoirtural film starring Fred Ward, Clancy Brown and Julianne Moore, directed by Martin Campbell (GoldenEye). Not "scary," per se, but great.

I know, I saw it coming and was prepared and it was still awful.

Night of the Demons (2010): being an ******* douchebag drug dealer gets you the hottest girl in the room. So very realistic lol. Otherwise goes for cheap pop out scares and tries to be Army of Darkness (fail). Don't watch.

Anyone seen this yet? Someone was telling me about this the other day. Said it wasn't scary as much as it was disturbing. I might have to check this one out sometime. DVD only thru Netflix, tho.

Oh yeah, I saw it. It was more well done than I expected, but the content was so disturbing I only recommend it to certain people. If the description doesn't turn you off you should check it out.

Insidious

I wasn't sure what to expect with this one, but I'm glad I watched it. There were a few of the typical Hollywood, "jump out of your seat" scare tactics. But there were also quite a few genuinely creepy and terrifying moments. I can honestly say that this is the first time in a long time that a movie actually had my skin crawling. And the best part was, they did it all by atmosphere and building tension, rather than relying on blood and gore. In fact, there was no gore at all. And there wasn't any blood either, aside from a few mysterious bloody hand prints.

The only real negative I can say about it is that the 2nd half of the movie kinda veers off away from the plot of the first half, and as a result, doesn't quite live up to the first half. It's still good, but not quite as good as I thought it could have been. In fact, the worst thing I can say about the second half, is that it reminded me a lot of the original Poltergeist (right down to the paranormal investigators and the Medium that come to help). Which is not a bad compliment at all.

All in all, it's not a great movie, but it's better than most of the crap that Hollywood has been trying to pass off as horror movies lately.

Stake Land: indie movie about life in the vampire/undead wasteland. Pretty good story about a guy and his adopted apprentice. Pretty dark, grim and gritty.

I would recommend.

It's there now. And so is C.H.U.D.!

Farsky's older post reminded me that people should watch Del Toro's "The Orphanage." Yes, it's subtitled, but still very good. Both creepy and a little sad, but very well done.

Also, if you haven't checked out "Tucker and Dale vs Evil" then you should as well. It's far more a comedy than a scary movie. It's a complete role reversal of the genre and worth a watch. If that still doesn't convince you, Alan "Wash" Tudyk is in it.

Another classic I always enjoyed that is back on Netflix streaming is Pet Sematary. Personally, I find this the scariest of all the King movies I've seen.

I've never seen Waxwork, but it's in the queue. Along with a lot of the classic monster movies like Frankstein, Dracula, Creature from the black lagoon, etc.

And while not completely in the horror genre, I still consider "Donnie Darko" a good Halloween-ish movie. I would recommend NOT watching the Director's Cut if you can avoid it. The Director's Cut takes a movie that used to inspire you to think for yourself and basically holds your hand like a little girl instead.


Bonus: I can't think of Donnie Darko without wanting to watch this excellently executed music video:

Hooray for a fun necro thread, finally!

I second Stake Land, finally a movie that made vampires monsters again, and not sparkly twinkletoes.

Also anyone in this thread should watch Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil. Not scary, but a great entry in the line of horror/comedy flicks.

I bought Drag me to Hell on blu-ray recently, I remembered it being good, but not so damn scary. Watching it in the middle of the night with the lights off and the sound cranked up, it was damn scary. Highly recommended.

Cabin in the woods comes out on blu-ray next week, if you haven't seen it definitely check it out. Horror with a great Whedon meta-take on it.

While not a horror movie, I really enjoyed "The Skin I Live In", very Hitchcock styled beautifully shot film.

For slow-burn horror, check out "The Innkeepers", small scale movie shot in a "real" haunted hotel, really gives it a great feel. The sound design is amazing.
