OK, $1400 to replace the clutch in my car. At almost 7 years and 90,000 miles.

There's nothing you can do to extend clutch life other than eliminate abuse and adjust the play, and I don't see you as the abusive type, Taam. 90,000 is a bit premature though.

If you're not the original owner, it's hard to say how the previous one treated it. Mechanical parts wear out and it may not be premature depending on make/model/year. So little is adjustable anymore with hydraulic systems, a lack of fluid or a leak messes things up in a hurry.

My wife asked me, at one point - why couldn't it be the Subaru that croaked? I reminded her that that's the car I replace the timing chain in and actually (sorta) took care of. Plus, it's a Subaru, supposed to last forever. If you take care of it, of course.

I am the original owner, and I don't THINK I ride the clutch, except when it's unavoidable. The day it died I spent 45 minutes in stop-and-go up a major hill, and that was the final straw. There's really no way to do that in a manual without riding the clutch. Wish I could have just pulled over until it cleared.

It's an '05 Ford Focus.

*facepalm*

When I had the car towed I told them to take it to the nearest Ford dealer. They did, and it was a 20 mile tow. The car is now 40 minutes from home because the towed it SOUTH of Evergreen and I live north.

Man, I hate having to make that towing decision, always at the spur of the moment. I've never been in love so deeply with a shop that I automatically would think to take it there. Good luck, sounds like a long bike ride.
