Coren:

Because you're apologizing for Sony and their continued bad practices? Sony is claiming they were hacked and accounts were compromised. You're claiming that this was just a run of the mill brute force attack that worked.

Guess which explanation I find more disturbing?

Wrong.

"We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment (“Networks”) services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database. These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources"

- Sony's actual claim on the matter.

Here's the edit before the one you posted ...

These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources. In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks. We have taken steps to mitigate the activity.

NM, you were referring to something else. Don't see how that matters though.

Edit: Nor do I see anything that could even imply Sony said they were hacked this time.

Do you have any idea how long it would take to go through 9.3 million account/password pairs and come up with 93,000 winners, Coren?

Awhile, though I don't know where you got that they used 9.3 million pairs.

I was being generous to Sony, Coren. 93,000 accounts were compromised by a brute force attack against 3 of Sony's networks. Let's assume they got the pairs from somewhere else. Sony claims this less than 1/10 of 1% of total accounts. We'll just say that it's 1/10 for simplicity's sake: That's 93 million accounts between the two networks. I was being extremely kind to Sony and suggesting they stopped it before pairs equal to 10% of their total sign-in pairs were tried. It could have been more. It's highly unlikely it was less, since 93,000 it enough accounts Sony said something to the public about it ...

For all we know though, it could have been something like 500k account passwords that someone got from another gaming network, tried them and found that 93k used the same info on PSN.

Nothing suggests that even close to 9.3 million pairs were tried.

It would, at this point, be less trouble (and cluttersome) to only start new threads notifying us of days on which Sony's security is not compromised.

Their security problems are so ubiquitous that their lawyers added a clause to their EULA forbidding class-action participation and direct law suits through the court system. To use these networks, you much now agree solely to binding arbitration through an arbiter of their choice. And you keep apologizing for them ...

If the issue is bad enough Sony's lawyers change their EULA, it's bad enough to not use their poduct.

Seriously, stop slobbering the Sony wang. They've demonstrated they don't give a **** about customer retention. They think their market share makes them immune to their own stupidity; and that's starting to bite them in the ***. The problem is, there are far too many people like you who would rather defend them for their failures.

I'm hardly a Sony fanboy, Khross, but I have to point out...

The answer to your question depends entirely on how big your botnet is.

There is no slobbering going on here. None. Remember, the first time I was accused of apologism here was when I dared suggest that Sony had gotten hacked, because the belief here was that they hadn't. And it turned out I was right.

So, that there makes the "Still an apologist 6 months later" claim entirely without merit, as your initial reason for claiming apologism was proven invalid.

And now, with this new incident, my word on the matter is nothing more than this: It wasn't a hack on Sony's network, according to all available information on the subject. Nothing more, and that statement is entirely 100% accurate.

So, since I fail to see how relating simple fact is "apologism" or "wang slobbering", please kindly cut it out with the ad hominems.
