This exchange from the Assassins Creed 2 thread brought a question to mind...

Yup. I impose this, too. Except, mine has to extend through January to cover my birthday, too.

We are all adults here. We can afford what we want, when we want it. If I want something, I usually will just buy it. With appropriate wifely permission, of course

That being said, why wait with the hope that someone else will buy it for you, especially if it is a highly anticipated new release? Granted, I have ended up doing this for exactly the reasons Kaffis stated, but it just ends up making me miserable waiting to get the game, say, a month later when X-mas rolls around when I can just buy it now just so my mother in law has a gift for me for X-mas.

Mine actually starts at the beginning of November, and includes anything "fun" :(
I put up with it because I really enjoy giving others the opportunity to buy me something I "really want" rather than something I "might possibly like somewhat". If I can't wait a couple of months for something as silly as entertainment (no offence intended Foamy), I have no place to talk ***** about the need for immediate gratification rampant in society.

Ya see, to me a gift shouldn't just be something the recipient was going to buy for themselves anyway, rather it should be something that may have required a little thought as to what the giver may think the recipient would like.

This is why I have a problem when I am given a list of presents to buy for a particular person.

My mother in law is most guilty of this. She told us which mailbox she wanted and where to order it and exactly the color she wanted, last year for christmas. This is not a gift. This required no thought on our part, rather we were just going through the motions of purchasing something that she could have very well done on her own.

Gifts should not be expected, they should not be from a list. It should be something that required a little thought on the part of the giver, rather than picking something from a list that the receiver says they want.

Oh, I don't tell people what I want, they still have to figure it out for themselves. It really just bites *** when someone has already purchased me a gift, and then I go out and buy it for myself.

This has been my (non-religious) argument against celebrating christmas. I don't like a specific time of year for gift-giving. It sorta takes a lot of the emotion out of it.

For the record, I didn't celebrate Christmas when I was a practicing Wiccan (Yule is a different thing), and we never felt motivated to start a new tradition when I finally decided all religion is really garbage.

People seem to think I am difficult to buy for. Regardless of the fact that I have a movie wish list of over 200 titles, that is regularly updated...

So they usually will try to buy something to alleviate the 'burden' of me having to buy it myself.

Just ask for gift cards instead. That way, you can buy the stuff you want now and when something else comes out in the future that you want, you basically get it free since you got all of those gift cards for Christmas.

If my parents were still alive, they would have been married 65 years on November 7th. That's a really long time and after that long, they acquired a heck of a lot of "stuff."

Growing up I can tell you it became near impossible to buy them ANYTHING because they HAD everything they wanted. lol After several years of ripping my hair out, trying to think of something...heck ANYTHING...to get them for Christmas, it became a blessing when they'd say "get me this" and be darn specific about what they wanted. There are seven kids, and I can't tell you how many phone calls transpired between Sept 1 and December 24...all wondering what everyone got Mom and Dad for Christmas, hoping to either "go in" on someone else's gift so they didn't have to stress over what to get them, or comparing notes to try and see if anyone had a suggestion because their minds were drawing a blank.

You're right, in the spirit of giving it's always nice to give someone something thought out and meaningful, but I'd rather get them something useful, something specific they want that I know will be used and appreciated rather then think for months on something that *I* think they might like, only to find it in their closed still in the box two years later.

I'm with Vindicarre -- I don't make lists, and I don't really drop leading hints. But I'm easy to buy for -- so long as I'm not self-indulging around the time of year when the gifting is happening.

And games (and movies, and books) are some of the easiest things to guess, for me. Most people who know me and spend any time talking to me and hanging out with me can reason out with a very good success rate, what of the new releases of the above I'd enjoy.

That's not to say that I haven't received some really memorable and excellent gifts that I hadn't even known existed, and loved when I was given them. Of course, I've also received some things that I never really got any use out of because they were just misses.

Well, with myself and my friends, we don't spend as much time hanging out as we used to. So games are always the safe thing since we're not as aware of whats going on with hobbies or what's needed around the house. Video games are the safe gift.

I'm a believer in buying stuff for myself at Christmas time. I know what I want, and I know my budget.

I don't wait, I just buy whatever games/movies I want, usually the day they come out.

I'd just as soon nobody waste money buying me something frivolous (or even anything at all). I'd rather just get a card or a phone call.

I ask for more essential things than games. The current plan is: some kind of multi-person seating for the slackroom.

This.

Shel: Hey, the new Fabtabulorama game is out today, can I get it for Christmas?

Me: Sure. You want me to pick it up and wrap it and put it under the tree? Or would you rather just grab it at Best Buy on the way home from work?

Shel: I'll get it.

Me: Merry Christmas.

My wife and I have a strict policy of not buying stuff after the beginning of November, it just makes it easier. There are exceptions, of course, but we tend to stick to it.

If I wait for others to buy me games, I usually end up a) wasting time waiting for b) the wrong game.

My wife and I provide very specific lists of games that we want to each other. Typically there's one above all others...

I always buy games I want immediately. For the first time in the history of my adult life, I have abstained from purchasing several games I've wanted in the past couple months. It is not easy.

But, I am getting a house out of the deal so I guess it's worth it. It better be.

I have noticed that if I can hold off the need to own the game for a couple weeks, that the urgency and want dies down to practically nothing. That helps.
