I've been looking for a job ever since I graduated in May. The computer job market in this area is almost non-existant. Luckily, with my wife's current job, I hadn't quite reached the point of desperation yet. However, our financial situation will be changing in January, so I really needed to find something by then. And to top it all off, the people that I worked with at my old government job have called me or emailed me about 2 positions, basically begging me to come back to work for them. I left that place because there was no potential to grow or move up. That's why I went back to school in the first place. Not to mention that those jobs were not computer related, at all. But things were getting to the point where I was actually considering going back.

Well, yesterday I went for an interview for a Network Tech position, and he flat out told me in the interview, that if I wanted the job, it was mine. I came home and called my wife, first thing. We talked about it a lot last night, and today, I accepted the position.

I'll be working for a small-ish, locally owned business, that has 2 offices here in Louisiana, and one in Mississippi. They are growing rapidly, and are looking to open up more offices in Arkansas and Texas. They provide technology solutions to a lot of Education facilities (mostly K-12), Government agencies, and Health Care providers. In addition to setting up and providing support for WAN's throughout the state, I'll also get some training and experience with technologies that will be new to me, such as Security & Surveillance or Video Conferencing. I'm very excited about some of the things I'll be working with. Also, they will be paying for me to get my Network+ certification within my first year there, and they want me to get my CCNA after that. They will pay for the week long training class, and the certification test itself. And I'll get a significant pay raise after both certs. And I start out with 2 weeks of vacation from day one. The pay, is not as much as I had hoped, honestly. But it does have great benefits, and I will have a lot of growth potential, especially once I get a couple of those certs under my belt.

I'm so nervous and excited, all at the same time. Never thought I'd be re-starting my career at 35, but here I am. I will start exactly 3 years and 1 month since I resigned from my dead-end government job. I've been playing Mr. Mom and Student for the past 3 years, and I'm not sure if I remember how to do this career thing, haha. Guess it's time to find out.

Congrats! Sounds like the timing was dead on, and the job sounds like it has a lot of potential.

Oh, and starting over? I started over at 38, and now I'm contemplating starting over again at 51 ... Common wisdom nowadays is that you'll have an average of three careers before you're done working, I believe.
