made it to 100 smithing last night, made my first batch of dragon armor.

Frustratingly, Heavy Armor requires both bones & scales, where light just requires scales. (I had been hoping to make a set of light, and a second set of heavy) But as it was I only had enough scales to make Chest+Boots+Gloves (and then improve all three to Legendary --available at 90+, apparently the highest upgrade)
Now, I just need to get my enchanting up. This strikes me as the hardest to master, I need to find an item with soul trap, so I can de-enchant it and re-enchant my bow.

FYI There are no Dragon-weapons. I may pick up daedric smithing just to make weapons. (somewhat disappointing, given every other type of smithing has both armor & weapons)

I understand that daedric is better than dragon anyway when it comes to heavy armor. Daedric is just bit more rare since the hearts are less plentiful than bones.

According to some info Sean shared with me, you can max your armor benefit in steel.

You can. However, availability of materials is something of an issue. (unless you want to keep waiting 2 days at a time) --and then its something of a crapshoot--and I couldn't get any profit (or any noticeable profit at least) on steel (or iron) though the skillup rate seemed fairly similar.
I wasn't exactly being scientific about it.

That said, from unimproved->Legendary pretty much doubles the value of Glass, Elven and Dwarven, Dragon armors. (you can't raise iron or leather past Exquisite) Its well worth the money to invest in ingots and improve gear before selling it to the merchant. (assuming you have even slightly decent speechcraft)

On the other hand, I'm not sure its worth it if you're only improving to Exquisite level (Ie, if you don't have that particular smithing type) unless you're just trying to skill up. You can't improve past Exquisite if you don't have a perk. Since there is no perk for Iron, leather armor, you can't go any higher.

I should also note that you'll skill-up for a net loss, until about 50 smithing. After that it actually becomes profitable. (subject to speachcraft skill of course0

Armor Cap

Damage reduction is capped at 80%. If you are wearing all four pieces of armor, this occurs at 567 displayed armor rating. If you have 100 skill and all relevant armor perks, this requires a smithed armor rating of about 135. You can increase your smithed armor rating by 1 roughly every 2 points of Smithing with the appropriate perk, or every 4 without. Therefore, at 100 Smithing you will need 85 base armor with the appropriate perk, which is not achievable with Light Armor (though Dragonscale comes close at 82 for the set) and requires at least a Steel Plate set for Heavy Armor. With Fortify Smithing apparel you can boost Smithing even further, which can potentially allow any material for which a Smithing perk exists to reach the cap. At the extreme end, you will need about 126 Smithing to make Steel Armor hit the cap, and about 154 Smithing for an Elven set. Unfortunately, Fur, Hide, Studded, Leather, and Iron armors are not affected by any Smithing perks and so cannot be improved as much.
Spells and the Lord Stone can reduce the base armor required to hit the cap even further, but these require more management.

I think i'm going to re-roll. I wanted to go pure caster but as I gain cool weapons and such I am reminded that casters get boring upgrades.

Do all parts of the weapon/armor creation process (hide tanning, weapon sharpening and creation, armor upgrading and creation) all count toward smithing increases?

Spoiler:
Has anyone successfully created an enchanted weapon at the Silent Moon Bandit camp blacksmith forge? A book nearby the forge says that weapons forged when the moon is out will grant a "vampiric" enchantment on said weapon. I tried a couple of times, and I think the moon may just not have been out. Just haven't made it back there yet to retry after confirming the moon is out.

This is an Elder Scrolls game, Dash ...

You can just change what you're doing.

The moon is pretty obvious, (I shudder to think what the tidal stresses on Tarmiel are. they must have earthquakes daily) I've not actually tried to create lunar gear. Nor have I tried to use the skyforge in any meaningful way.

I dont think hide tanning or smelting count. But Armor/weapon creation do, as does sharpening/upgrading.

Side note: This game and it's 2handed charging perk is the best simulator of my charging D&D barbarian. It has yet to get old after hundreds of kills.

The only downside: Enemies occasionally give the standard townsperson's annoyed saying when you sprint by them... as their lifeless bodies slump to the ground. "Watch it!" "Hey, Cut it out!"

So, did anyone elses game get broken by yesterdays patch? I cannot play despite doing some of the fixes mentioned like reverting to a previous version of the .exe and verifying my Steam cache.

The tomorrow of yesterday....

I was playing fine late last night. *shrug*

Sorry to hear it's not working for you Ulfynn. Do you run any mods? I would try disabling those first.

Edit: Looks like if you used a mod that allowed the game to use more than 2GB of RAM, that this patch may have issues with that. At least at first google glance, that is what I've found.

I actually never use mods of any kind for TES games. I know I'm probably in the minority as far as that goes.

I think my machine has 4GB of RAM (not at home and I forget for sure if its 2 or 4), but it ran fine for the 1st week. It ran great in fact.

Now, when I load any save, I can hear everything going on (hit R and hear my weapon draw, hit Esc and hear the menu open, etc), but I have a black screen.

Anyhow, I'll have to keep digging. Thanks for the suggestion.

Clearly, Khross is Merlin, and lives his perception of the stream of time against the flow as we perceive it.

How chivalric of you, Kaffis; but I find it rather gauling you would compare my mystical prowess to such a hack as Merlin. I'm at least strangely worthy ...

Dont you get a limited number of perks though? Not sure if that is a big impact. Guess not.

I just finished an unbroken 14 hour marathon session. I am now completely convinced that this game is going to destroy my life.

Jesus, I'm finally done. I have some Tief Guild achievements left, but my motivation to bother is fading. I'd like to move on with my life. It's fun, but I want to stop. :D
