The "DADT" policy was neither intolerant, nor bigoted. What it was, was outdated and of no meaningful military utility. Had the benefits to good order and discipline in the military of maintaining DADT outweighed the disadvantages of maintaining it, then maintaining it would have been the right decision.

The fact is, however, that tolerance in society in general has progressed to the point where openly gay soldiers can no longer be said to be a definite threat to good order and discipline, while on the other hand it makes no sense to kick out Arabic linguists and medics in the middle of a war.

The decision was the right one in terms of military utility and regardless of its political benefits or disadvantages, that's the criteria it was decided on. That was why there was hollering and screaming that the Pentagon had to certify that this decision was acceptable in terms of military calculus. The left wanted the decision made on the basis of "social justice" because that's what the military is to the left, to varying degrees: a social and jobs program.

Indeed. When you get to the point of implying that Rick Perry is somehow in the closet because he happens to be wearing a similar jacket to a gay cowboy, it's really pathetic.
