This isn't to bash on all LEO, but there are some that need to be taken out an shot, unfortunately that's not an option in this case.

27 years ago I was victimized by the police a a search warrant executed on the wrong address. during the course of the search we were held in the backroom room for several hours. unable to see or observe what was going on.
The confiscated several weapons from my home. Supposedly inventoried all of them on the paper they gave us. Over all the inventory was correct except for one item was list as just 12g shotgun, no make, no model, and no serial #.
after several months of fighting to get the return of property we finally get a release to claim our property I go to claim the guns I get them all back but for the shotgun they try to give me a mossberg 500 wrong gun and they refuse to acknowledge it. I provide documents and photos and serials # of the missing gun. No record of it being entered in inventory. more months of fighting and nothing the weapon is officially classified as stolen.
The Shotgun of record is a Browning Citori - pigeon grade. It Was a gift from my grandfather when I graduated from HS, he had my initials engraved on the tang

Current times
I have a very large Auction house that we do occasional work for, I was on site last week to review plans for a car revolve to facilitate the Auto auction side of the business. As I was preparing to leave a van arrived with some estate item to be sold at next months Auction, Several guns were in the lot, including a Browning Citori. I ask If I can look over the guns the clerk hands me the guns as I ask for them. I ask to see the shotgun he hands it to me, I look it over and there Plain as day are my initials on the tang. After some conversations with the company officers the police, and ATF are notified. they get involved and do a detail record search they find the stolen report the photos details. I was fortunate that I still had the original paper work from when I received the gun.
Today I met with ATF and they released the gun back to me.
I will be doing a full inspection of the gun tomorrow, and then have my gunsmith look it over for any problems that I might have missed.
If all is well I'm taking it quail hunting on Saturday.

The Estate in question was a retired police detective. They traced the records and he was on officer on the misdirected raid.

Holy cow, Lesh! That's amazing. Congratulations on getting your gun back after all these years. It obviously completely sucks that it was taken from you in the first place, but the serendipity involved in its recovery is really incredible. A gift from your grandfather, lost for 27 years, then found by purest chance.... Cherish that gun, man. The universe obviously wants you to have it.

Glad to hear you got it back Leshani, and sorry that you had to go through all that. At least he won't be troubling anyone else.

Cool story, but I'm really having trouble not reading "Citoris" as something else. Good thing I'm not in an office, or I would be afraid to look it up!

Good luck this weekend :D

That's the best story of the year, bar none. What a great Christmas present. Couldn't happen to a better guy, Lesh.

/cheers

Got to my gunsmith today and he went over it, good to go for hunting. A couple minor dings on the Hammer plate, and 1 ding on one of the ejectors but fully functional.
by his estimate less then 1000 rds through the gun.
He also took the time to report the gun as recovered back to Browning as they still had a service advisory flag on it.
If weather permits I'm going to be putting the hurting on some Quail this weekend.

Ok, shooting report. it took me a couple shots to get the feel back( I did no range or skeet trap time). First bird **** high and right, second bird just a bit to low. Third bird wing clipped, from then on it was game on, 2 birds short of a limit for the day.
this gun is everything I remembered it to be, accurate, comfortable to shoot, and easy to follow up with.
I'm so happy to have it back.

My grandpa was a B-25 pilot in WWII. He once buzzed the Vatican, and in his words, "you could see the pigeon **** fly".

I don't think he ever specifically spotted bird **** relative to the bird though. I'm impressed!
