I watched Tangled for the first time this weekend. Really great movie, btw. At once point, Rapunzel, who has really long hair (spoiler alert!), manages to braid 70 feet of hair down into an approximately 4.5' braid. Now, obviously this is a cartoon, and it's not going for realism. However I've seen similar occurences in other movies and such: where a long haired person manages to hide all tha hair inside a hat or whatever. Alternately, someone with really long hair manages to fit it all into a bun, or a ponytail/twintails.

So my question is, how realistic is that? I've never had long hair so I have no experience with it myself. Does hair compress really well or something?

I've seen female soldiers hide some truly enormous amounts of hair beneath a patrol cap or helmet before.

Leia is what immediately came to mind. You can hide a LOT of hair by wrapping it up.

It sort of depends on the kind of hair you've got. Taamar's hair is thin and fine (ie: the individual hairs are thin *and* the number of hairs on her head is comparatively low), so she can wind her hair up into a very small bun. My hair is both thicker and denser (thicker hairs and more of them), so if I were to attempt such a thing, it simply wouldn't work as well.

My hair at its longest was mid back. When I put it up in a bun for work it is not bulky at all. My hair is pretty thick and kinky too. It compacts really well. I put it on top of my head in what is called a messy bun, lol, just a bunch of hair sticking out all over. But it's out of the way and easy to do.

**** fractals, man!

Braiding/bunning hair is just like this, only in reverse.

I'm completely serious.
