How is dual wielding supposed to work? Do you just use the two mouse buttons to attack with each weapon independently, or is there some way to make a "combo" attack or a dual power attack or something?

Yep, each button controls a weapon; just like other weapon styles, holding the button down does the power attack.

Spoiler:
Dark Brotherhood quest has you eventually assassinating the emperor. The Imperials however are mostly sympathetic to the talos worshipers, its primarily the Thalmor who are the issue. The Thalmor are basically coercing the empire into various decisions. its not that the Empire is evil, simply that the Thalmor are the ones pulling the strings--the Thalmor are manipulative SOBs. Maybe if you're playing Altimer they're not such assholes

I do advise you to get your winterhold house before completing any of the Empire/Stormcloak line, as completing that quest may make Winterhold house quest line uncompleteable.

I received my winterhold house after going deep into the Stormcloak questline. I would assume you could do the same if you complete the Empire side as well.

Oh, and for dual wielding: You get two benefits. 1, your weapons swing faster (you have to swing them individually, but each one has a faster swing timer). 2. If you press and hold both mouse buttons at the same time, you do a dual-wielding power attack with both weapons (and it has a different animation than all the others).

Awesome. Which quest line is the Winterhold house quest?

I just started on the Stormcloak line last night; going to do that for my first character which will be my standard Nord Ranger type that I beat Oblivion and Morrowwind with.

Winterhold "House":

Spoiler:
"Revealing the Unseen" starts the quest to get the Arch-Mage's quarters in Winterhold. Talk to the Arch-Mage and then Mirabelle about the Staff of Magnus.

Oh wait. I take back what I said. Winterhold is where the mage school is at. I was thinking of Windhelm, which is where Ulfric Stormcloak resides (and the city that receives the most snow, which is why the name Winterhold threw me off).

I never received a property in Winterhold. But I also never spent much time there. Never did the mage questline (other than being forced to start a part of it for the main questline, which I did not like at all).

I was really unimpressed with Winterhold. I know it was supposed to have been destroyed and everything, but three houses out in the open is not something I would consider a "hold." The Jarl of Winterhold must be the lamest of all Jarls.

The towns are kinda small realistically, but I understand that there are limitations and having a huge town would present gameplay problems and etc. That town though... It's not even a town. It's hard to suspend my disbelief there.

That's been something of a problem in the last two games as well. I don't recall that you had to become a member of the Mages' Guild for the main quest in either of them, but access to a lot of basic utility required membership in it, which made no sense if you weren't putting serious effort into casting. Oblivion was particularly obnoxious in that regard since simply joining was a massive effort, and if you accidentally pissed off the guild, regaining their good graces was another massive effort.

A manly mod for those of you that think dragon fights are a bit too easy. Want them to really be the epic fights they were meant to be? Give Deadly Dragons a download and... have fun.

I received the PC version for Christmas. Since my daughter has now claimed the X-Box indefinitely for Halo purposes, I elected to keep it. What mods are people running/recommending?

Just so you know ...

The Dark Brotherhood quest line blows in Skyrim; it blows so much ...

I'm going to give this a try. Thank goodness for Nexus Mod Manager; I'd be utterly lost trying to do this stuff manually.

The actual land area in the game is definitely smaller than it first appears when you glance at the map, although I'm finding it fine, just big enough, stuffed pretty well with locations.

As for the Dark Brotherhood quest line, I'm actually just about to start it. I've finished the mage quest line and I'm on the final step of the thief quest line, which I think is the better of the two. The mage quest line was too short and ended a bit abruptly.

Spoiler:
I had really hoped to actually travel to the home of the psyjics and possibly become a member.

The Thieve's Guild is the only major faction in Skyrim that feels right when it's all said and done. Amusingly, I think the game is vastly superior to its writing.

The area is on the small side. It's the same size roughly as the Oblivion area, but it's more broken up by mountains and such so it seems bigger initially, but that wears off.

I would have liked to see it being about 50% to 100% bigger with the same number of "discoverable" locations, but more of the smaller, "unnamed" type things to find in proportion to size. Still, I can't complain too much as there's plenty to do. Not doing Dark Brotherhood on this character; it's not consistent with her theme. I'll probably hit it later on with a different character.

anyone else disappointed that there seemed to be no real point to having a bard's college? Or did I miss something?

Just some random fetch quests from what I could tell. More or less what you get with the other joinable factions with pretty much no storyline.

I think it's an attempt to revive the concept of a "bard" and provide an explanation for the various bards you see hanging around. There was a "bard" class in Arena but it was redundant with the Nightblade as the mage/thief hybrid class and it disappeared in either Daggerfall or Morrowwind. There are musical instruments lying around as well, so it might be possible to play as a "bard" of sorts. I haven't really tried.
