Got my new machine built the other day, it was running fine. Today I turn it on and I hear a crackle and power goes out. The PSU is putting out power to the board but when you hit the start button on the board nothing - the fans give a little blip of movement, but then stop. So got an RMA number from newegg to return the MB, I just hope nothing happened to the CPU I will be pissed if it got fried.

So now I need to pick out another board, I am not getting the same one again.

Motherboard Manufacturer Checklist:

1. Are you overclocking?

Yes: Buy ASUS, Gigabyte, EVGA, or MSI
No: Buy Intel

2. Are you using more than 1 video card?

Yes: Buy Z68 Chipset
No: Buy P67 Chipset

That solves your problem ...

Well I had the ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z/GEN3 LGA 1155 Intel Z68 MB, which decided to commit suicide after 2 days. I had only just started playing with the OC yesterday I had gone up to 4.2 on the i5 2500k CPU.

It was supposed to be a good board however...

If you examine the motherboard, can you determine what failed? Can you identify any scorch marks, or anything?

Is any part of the motherboard in contact with the case? (i.e. are the motherboard standoffs in the right holes?)

I looked at the board but I didn't see anything. The standoffs were all good I triple checked all the locations before I put the board on. I already got my rma from new egg and shipped it out. I swung by the local microcenter and picked up a new MSI board and will work on putting it together again tomorrow.

Although I have to run out one more time the MB I just bought only have 2 sata cables and I need 3 %&^$. Plus I need to clean the thermal paste off of the sink and cpu.

It's great having a Microcenter nearby, ain't it? They're fairly competitive on pricing on some of the big stuff I was gonna buy for my new build, and have all the piddly S#$@ that you need & forgot. I'm a few miles from the one in Michigan, and it's like a toy store. :)

Oh yes, it is a great store. They also said the price match with new egg which I didn't know before. It is only about a 10 minute drive to my local one.
