I was reading an article about store rankings and then went through the comments. I saw a lot of comments about only having a couple of choices on where to shop which intrigued me. I have lived in a few places and have never seemed to lack for shopping choices, the really funny thing is I had never even heard of Walmart until about 10 years ago because of all of the other places.

So are the choices really that limited, or do people limit themselves based on perception? People always say Walmart is cheapest so they have to shop there. The few times I have gone to one the wasted time trying to find stuff plus the lower quality I have found (talking food only on this) made it seem like less of a bargain. If I spend money on meat I want it to be good or else to me I wasted my money.

From a choice perspective how many stores are near you and how much variety do you have?

Within a mile of my house (we sometimes ride our bikes to the store since they are so close) we have

1) Aldi
2) Meijer
3) Kroger
4) Giant Eagle

If I expand it to 5 miles I can add
1) Walmart - I don't go there anymore though
2) Target
3) Trader Joes
4) Sams Club

If I want to drive about 10 - 20 minutes I can also add
1) Whole Foods
2) Costco - We have a membership here
3) North Market - Which is a collection of small butchers, seafood, produce, bakers etc. in a small cooperative marketplace

Not to mention during the summer the farmers markets that you trip over every 20 feet around the city.

So am I spoiled? Do people really have that limited of choice?

I could have put this in the food section but I wanted a wider response

I actually forgot a couple of places
1) Andersons - they have an awesome meat department (House of meats) we go there often actually
2) Carfagna’s - a local owned butcher shop that again has awesome meat choices
3) Rasin Rack a local all organic store
4) Hill's market which is kind of like a small local version of Whole Foods

Plus many assorted ethnic stores, Mexican, Indian etc.

What range do you want the poll to reflect?

I've got a Kroger (and a couple gas stations if you want to get technical on the "convenience" store bit) within a mile of my house.
If I expand that to 5 miles, I throw in a Wal-Mart, Meijer, and Marsh (probably local, I've never seen it outside my county).
Commit to a 20 minute drive, and I could add Aldi's (which is right near work), Target, and maybe a Sam's Club to the list.

I never drive 20 minutes for normal grocery shopping, though. So I guess I'm inclined to answer 4-5.

Assuming you mean, within reasonable distance (10 minutes driving for me).

I have Aldi, Walmart, two Giant Eagle's, BJ's, Valuking, Marc's, a farmer's market and a Heinen's.

If I lived 20 minutes east of where I am currently, I would have two choices (Walmart or Giant Eagle). If I lived 20 minutes south of where I am currently I would have two choices (Heinen's or Walmart).

I was thinking more in terms of a reasonable drive. My longer drive time stores are those I hit up on the way from work or when we are out and about on a weekend anyway.

Guesstimating within 5 miles of my house, there's a Kroger, Food Town, Randalls, HEB, Walmart, another Randalls. The Kroger is ~1 mile from my house. There's also a new grocery store planned about half a mile from my house, in a new neighborhood they're building up.

Within 1 mile of my house there are trees I own.

Assuming I'm driving or riding a bike or otherwise not orienteering across my neighbor's properties ... within 5 miles of my house ... there are trees I own.

There's a Publix a couple of miles from our home. Publix is really damn expensive, though. Generally we do our grocery shopping at the Super Target (around five miles away), with supplemental material from the local farmer's market (only open on Saturdays) and Whole Foods (rare, as it's about twenty miles away).

We've got HEB and Wal-Mart that I can think of off the top of my head, but there's lots of little local grocers as well, where you generally need to speak at least a little spanish to check out. They often have excellent prices and nice meat and vegetables however, as well as things the large stores don't carry.

Both Carfagana's and the North Market are closer to me than the nearest Wal Mart, about 5 miles to either one, 7 miles to Wal Mart. Giant Eagle and Kroger are within blocks. I also have Weiland's Gourmet Grocery about a mile from here.

Killuas, have you ever tried Hill's Market in Worthington Hills? It's a gourmet market on 315 just north of 270.

Within 5 miles, 0 grocery stores. The only one in town closed last year.

Within 20 miles (specifically in the nearest small city), three stores; Wal-mart, Fareway, and HyVee.

There are a ton around me. Just off the top of my head, places that I've actually been and within 5 miles...

Albertsons
Walmart
Trade Joe's
Whole Foods
World Market
Fresh 'n Easy
Sprouts (aka. Henry's, aka. Boney's)
Ralphs
Smart & Final
Vons
Costco
+3 independently owned local markets
Farmers Market on the weekend

If I do a google maps search around my place for 'grocery stores' there are more than 50 options within 5 miles.

My bi-weekly shopping trip includes 8, we rarely need to hit all of them but always go to at least 4.
Sprouts
World Market
Whole Foods
Costco
Sunflower
Target
Safeway
King Soopers

I've shopped at Walmart, but not in years... there is literally nothing there I want that isn't available cheaper at one of the others stores. And I know a lot of people dis 'Whole Paycheck', but for some items on my list it's the least expensive option!

EDIT: Oh, I guess I should count the Asian market, the middle eastern market, and the butcher.

Nearest,
Raley's - three blocks, I can walk. Sometimes do walk.

Within a couple miles,
Safeway
Nugget
Grocery Outlet
Mexican Grocery - don't know the real name
Walmart Superstore

Within ten miles
Sacramento Co-op
More Raley's and Safeways
lots of Farmer's Markets during the week
Whole Foods
Trader Joe's
Costco
Sam's Club
Bel Air
Target - which I don''t think of as a grocery

I'm kind of urban, or barely suburban. Lots of Mom and Pop stores around too.

Across the street from where I work is a CVS pharmacy, which isn't really a grocery, but gets a lot of my snack money.

Aldi - my main store
Mejier- the stuff I can't get at Aldi (mainly diet Pepsi)
Save-a-lot/Rays- my in a hurry, on the way home stores.
Walmart- avoided like the plague, not because it's Wal-mart, mainly because of location (just out of the way)
Sam's-see Wal-mart x 100
Aunt Milie's Bread Oulet- Bread.
No Costco, Kroeger, or good ethnic grocers I know about.

There's a Winn-Dixie fairly close as well, but I don't think I've ever even stepped foot into it.

I'm suprised there are so many chain stores in the US. I do most of my food shopping at local groceries, bakers, butchers and speciality stores.

I only get non-food items from the chains, as they always tend to have less fresh stuff.

Costco is awesome for stuff without expiry periods though.

Yes I have been to Hill's many times they have some good stuff. I didn't realize there was a Weiland's in town never heard of it before actually, guess I will have to take a look.

Sounds like most people have a lot of choices at least on this board.

Lydiaa there are a lot of regional chains in the US, so you may see a lot of the smae stores in one area of the country but different stores in others. Of course there are some national chains as well.
