My pick was "con man." Nut job is also a very real possibility, but I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

Note I'm not picking specifically on the Mormon faith, here. Every other prophet in every religion was also very likely a con man or a nut job.

The funny thing about Mormonism is that you never really hear anything bad about them aside from the origin of their religion. It's not like Christianity or Islam, where if you listen to people those religions will be the end of the world. I live in Mormon country now and they are really nice people. Honestly, it reminds me of the South Park episode.

We could, though I think Joseph Smith is different than any of those listed. Martin Luther didn't claim to be a prophet; Noyes and Crowley had comparatively tiny and obviously fleeting followings; Hubbard is just obviously a con man; and Muhammad, Jesus, Buddha and Abraham (assuming they even existed) aren't from the modern era. Smith seems to be in a category all his own - modern person who claims direct revelation from God and establishes a full-fledged religion that survives for over a century, has tens of millions of adherents, and doesn't appear to be organized as a cult. I can't think of anything comparable.

See...I don't see any real difference between Scientology, Mormonism, Islam, Catholicism or any other faith. If they were satire, they might be as impressive as the Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster, but they don't even have that advantage. Hubbard isn't any more obviously a grifter than any of the others. They're all equally absurd.

I wouldn't exactly say Robert Smith is from the modern era. The '80s is ancient history.

I believe that what he preached is incorrect. Whether this is by design or because he was mislead by supernatural entities greater than himself I cannot say.

It was Brigham Young who took his story and made it a true mythology and workable as a religion.

As an aside, there is as much evidence that Jesus, Mohammad, and Buddha existed (despite whatever views about the truth of them can be) as other historical figures of their eras.

However focusing on a more modern era is perfectly valid.

Getting back on subject. If Jesus came to north America after his resurrection, then it would be in keeping with the character of God to keep a remnant of those followers, as opposed to simply having someone find evidence of their existence.

Of course. Disintegration is the best album ever, but everyone who was alive when it came out is dead. Hell, there isn't even anyone alive today who knows someone that was alive back then.

Look, the Cure predates Depeche Mode, and only old people listened to Depeche Mode. That means the Cure are studied through fossil records.

Speaking of Depeche Mode, does anyone else associate them with douchy, leftist, francophile snobs wearing all black clothes, skinny jeans, and heavy eye-liner sitting around drinking red wine, smoking Gauloises cigarettes and ***** about the capitalist establishment and the maudit anglais? Or is it just me?

ETA: I know they're a Brit band, not a French one. It's just that the type of people i knew who liked them were all either Quebecois nationalists or english francophile douchebags. They were all like a mix of today's OWS and hipster crowds, with the Quebecois nationalist twist.

...that's a very detailed image, RD. I never knew anyone who was more into Depeche Mode than having People are People on a mix tape or owning Violator.

As for Joe W Smizzle, I voted con-man. Of course that's a very simplified description, but it does capture the bulk of my opinion. Snake-oil salesman meets Hubbard, or something.

My mom converted to LDS when I was about 6 or 7, so I got drug through church for several years. When I was 14 I finally was able to convince my mom that she couldn't make me go anymore. None of my younger siblings remained with the church either.

I don't discuss it with my mom because I don't want to cause a rift, but I have mixed feelings about the LDS church. I think most members are good people, but I think it's founding and early history are pretty messed up.

I love DM, prolly my favorite group of all time. Its the only band I have a shirt of atleast.

Maybe in part, but not anywhere near exclusively. They've inspired a ton of musicians and I find it hard pressed to see any trend among them besides their enjoyment of Depeche Mode.

I do not know if he was a con man, a nut job, a true prophet, etc.

I do not have the slightest clue what went through his mind. But I do like the family values his religion espouses. Not the polygamy, but the closeness of family and keeping the family unit together.
