They're not finalized. There will be some spotting roles for infiltrators (that aren't fully implemented yet) and the UI elements themselves will likely be smaller.

It's just been announced over twitter that E3 will feature a playable PlanetSide 2, and a few associated tweets have implied that the E3 attendees will be playing against and among beta players.

After reading that, I am now more than slightly uncomfortable due to my fully erect ears. I'm listening.

I squee'd a little, not gonna lie. It's purdy, and it looks like it'll feel like Planetside. The only thing I'm not terribly keen on is kill times again, but I feel like the way health and kill times were set up gave a very tactical feel. I'm still hoping for just a wee bit more durability, so it doesn't feel like the zerg rush will determine battles.

Yeah, I've been braced for the faster TTK's, which have been cited as necessary to appeal to the modern FPS players, but I still am grudging in my acceptance.

When posed with the design spectrum of "more tactical, less twitchy gameplay" and "broader appeal so there's more enemies to shoot"... I'm okay with moving that slider to the right some, so to speak. I just sulk a little bit at the universe that makes those two factors on different ends of the same axis.

Aww, hell yeah. This sounds awesome. From the Audio Director for PS2:
Saintlycow wrote:
Looking forward to the Music, Rodney.

If you can, can you tell us what genres the different faction musics are?

Sure - this actually very cool, and discussed at length between the design team and myself.

The empirical Terran Republic will be treated to an epic orchestral score, which we are actually recording up in Seattle here within a couple weeks (yes, we are doing a bit of the behind-the-scenes footage capture for this).

The New Conglomerate, being the living-on-the-edge, anarchist scavengers they are will be more frontier-like, with a cool blues-rock approach featuring slide guitars and fiddle (little harder-edged than the Firefly TV series' music by Greg Edmonson). This music will all be recorded here in San Diego with local musicians specializing in this genre, following the orchestral session.

The technologically-advanced Vanu Sovereignty will be based around purist electronica, a bit in the vein of what you've heard recently from Daft Punk, but with more of an ethnic flare to ground them in their humanity.

But don't despair if you think this sounds like a departure from the first game - we employed full use of nostalgic thematic material across the board from PS1, and I think you will be delighted with these renewed treatments of classic themes that you know and love.

Hopefully this whets your appetite a bit until we do the full music announcement - good stuff!

Stay tuned! Things are about to get Bad ***.

- Rodney

Nom. Keep an eye on TotalBiscuit's Youtube channel in the next day or two. Just got finished watching the livestream he did as an open interview/commentary with Higby while one of the PS2 devs was playing. It was a good hour-ish long, and had some pretty cool stuff (I want to drive my Sunderer already!!!) considering it wasn't combat-focused.

Can't wait for the E3 stream next week to see some proper combat.

Check out the briefing they give at E3 to attendees, and then watch...

Yesterday's commented livestream:

I assume part 2 is floating around his channel, too, there's another hour of that.

Also, tune in again today at 3pm PDT/6pm EDT for another round, live.

I'm still not particularly thrilled about the direction they took with tanks. I think they have specs for gunners though that let you switch that up.

There've been some comments from developers suggesting that they're open to beta feedback on this front. I plan on hammering it hard, then, because I prefer sturdy, durable vehicles, but I don't want durable driver-gunned vehicles to be glorified super-armor.

Regardless.. the engine looks fantastic and appears to be performing well under an impressive player-load so far.

Today, it sounds like they got headsets for the demo stations, and have coached the SOE players to try to get them to take a more active squad organization and cooperative vehicular assault role. Seeing some Galaxy drops today so far already, and that makes me happy.

Clearly, I'm in the Twilight Zone.

Planetside 2 has won Game Informer's 2012 E3 Best in Show award.

Yes, the magazine owned by the retail chain which barely deigns to even stock pre-ordered PC games anymore has awarded their best in show award to a PC-exclusive game that won't even exist as a boxed product.

I was going to bold all the incomprehensible parts of that last statement, but there are so many I don't know how to indicate where one ends and another begins.

I think that speaks highly of the quality of the game the Planetside 2 dev team have brought and made playable on the E3 floor.

Add Gamespy's Best of E3 in the Best Shooter, Best Free to Play, and Best PC-Exclusive categories to the list.

And IGN gave it Best MMO of E3.

Let the accolades and praise just roll in!

Not that it seems I can tear anybody here away from the Diablo 3 thread long enough to notice the awesome they're overlooking...
