Star Wars: The Old Republic lead designer Emmanuel Lusinchi has spoken to GamesTM about the level of competition in the MMO market. He mentions that the quality of the competition is more important than the free-to-play pricing model, but suggests that Bioware are willing to consider other pricing options.

“The MMO market is very dynamic and we need to be dynamic as well,” he said. “Unless people are happy with what they have, they are constantly demanding updates, new modes and situations. So we are looking at free-to-play but I can’t tell you in much detail. We have to be flexible and adapt to what is going on.”

Bioware Austin have recently adapted to falling subscriber numbers by reducing the number of staff at their Austin studio last month. Lusinchi told us that “the MMO is the toughest part of the game industry without a doubt.”

He added that Austin “have a very large development team still, definitely one of the biggest in the industry,” and mentioned that the team “have a very complete and detailed plan for the rest of the year.

“The players don’t really care about all that, behind closed curtains, but they want what they’re paying for which is a service with new content, new systems, that’s what they’re asking for and we listen to them. That’s what we mean to deliver.”

The next update, 1.3, doesn’t contain any especially thrilling new features, but will introduce some much-requested additions like a looking for group tool, server transfer support, adaptive gear and class balance changes. The updates teased at E3 were much more promising, with mention of a new planet, a new species and a level cap boost.

Provided they don't implement the monetization short-sightedly, this could be very good news for them.

My only reservation about this is that I think F2P in general lowers the quality of the player base. swtor has a fairly mature player base (at least compared to the other MMO's I have played).

I don't even worry too much about 'pay to win', because the counter arguments to that are ...

1) i don't play to "win" anyway, and don't really care of other people have better stuff than me (PvP is probably an exception, but I don't PvP), and

2) It allows people with a life to progress to content they would normally have to pass on because they put their family and jobs before the rep grind or whatever.

I realize there is a downside. Some people 'work' hard to get their stuff... Myself included in many cases...

I just don't care..

The 'pay monthly' subscription model is a dinosaur I think.. or at least it's headed that way. Just deal with it...

I qualify this opinion by stating that I think paying $15 a month for a game you play online with friends every day is like fscking stealing as far as the value of my entertainment dollars go.. compare it to the cost of going to a movie (for example)...

I totally agree, however, there's a powerful psychological pressure to play "to get your money's worth" when you're subscribing. The biggest draw for Free to Play for me is that I feel like I can play multiple games very casually that way; I would never subscribe to 5 $15 monthly gaming subscriptions, but I might pop between 5 free to play games periodically.

The value per dollar metric is valid, but it doesn't always jive psychologically. I may get 4 hours of movie entertainment out of $15, but I feel bad/guilty paying for an ongoing subscription if I don't play it for 2 months... even if that third month rolls around, I get the itch to play, and go on a 40 hour binge that month. From a logical standpoint, I got 40 hours of entertainment out of that $45, but it doesn't "feel" as responsible an expenditure as the 12 hours 6 movie tickets got me, because I paid for 2 months of service I didn't need.

And I think that's the biggest driver in the obsolescence of subscription models; it made sense and worked well when the selection was leaner, but now there are just too many games competing for the same players, and many of those players are losing the ardently defensive factionalism to be loyal to only one of them.

F2P carries a stigma (right or wrong) that it means the game isn't worth $15 a month to play. That is what swtor is dealing with now.

I suspect with swtor, as with any MMO launch, they expect a drop in subs after the initial launch period, and they expect to reduce staff at some point after launch, and they probably included some aspects (first 15 levels, etc..) of the F2P/RMT model as part of the plans from the very beginning.

All of these things carry a powerful negative stigma, especially in the media, that if they are doing these things, the game must be bad, etc...

LotRO still going strong and is just as good(if not better) than it was when it was subscription based, so it's not always true that F2P games drop off in quality after the move to F2P.

I'm beginning to appreciate more the free to play models with optional subscriptions, as long as subscriptions grant access to everything in addition to some form of real money currency. City of Heroes does that, and I kinda like it. It grants those who've paid subscriptions the benefit of the full game, but also gives them permanent rewards for subscribing. Everyone wins! Kind of.

It's a little choppy on fleet when there are 300 people gathered around the GTN.

Lag is an individual thing, depending on your system specs, etc...

I haven't had any issues at all with game play since moving the The Harbinger, other than getting spammed with people inviting my tank and healer to run hard modes with them...

It's a problem I can live with :D

That's how Lord of the Rings Online and DDO do it. You can play the game for free, but you have to purchase zones past a certain point to do quests and Deeds in them for turbine points. Or you can pay a subscription and get access to everything, plus 500 turbine points a month to spend in the store on cosmetic gear or just to save up for when you go off the VIP subscription to buy zones and such.
