So I am playing Tamino (one of the leads) in a production of Mozart's The Magic Flute Opera at the end of the month. It is going really well, but it is definitely not like anything I've done before. The last time I was in anything like this was in highschool (nearly 20 years ago) when I played the Rabbi's son in Fiddler on the Roof. Not really the same thing.

Trying to remember all the blocking and my lines, and of course the music. It is more than a little terrifying.

This is exactly why all my theatrical work in my life has been backstage.

I am guessing you are not singing it in German?

Who is playing the Queen of the Night?

No, we don't have supertitle capability, so doing it in German would make it hard for the audience to follow. The original plan was to do the arias in German, but Papageno's arias tell so much of the story. I actually memorized Tamino's aria in German before it was switched to English.

Now the only one singing in German is the Queen, which kind of fits, as she is supposed to be other worldly.

Tech rehearsals are boring. Hurry up and wait. It's a brand new theater, and this is the first show in it. So all the tech people are learning as they go.

It is going well though.

Ugh...tired. So glad I took vacation this week. It would not be fun going to work tomorrow morning.

Opening night.

Trying too remain calm and running through the opera over and over in my mind.

So opening night is over. It went really well over all. I got a lot of complements. We had a pretty good crowd too.

So it is done and over with. I'd say it was a complete success. The director was given the position of artistic director at the theater, so they must have been very happy with it.

Kind of crazy. If you would have told me a year ago I'd be the lead in an opera, I'd have told you that you were nuts.
