I'm sure many of you know how Colorado is going up in flames right now, so this won't be news to you but ... I had to share.

From the slideshow on Weather.com:

I'm having a bit of a hard time right now coming to grips with the idea that this isn't a Hollywood disaster movie or some far-off place that doesn't really mean anything to me in my everyday life. This is happening here, where I live. People I know and love are being directly impacted by this even as I type up this post.
I disagree with my governor - this isn't 'almost surreal'. This is the real thing.

It's the first time in a long time that I'm not wishing I was back in Colorado Springs :(

Maybe the tree huggers will start letting Colorado clear brush and do controlled burns again after this...

I've just about finished my wilderness firefighting certification, and I fully expect to be called out multiple times this year.

There's already a state wide fire prohibition here in Utah, and I'd guess most western states have something similar in place or will soon.

There's also a decent sized fire south of me that's still raging pretty heavily and has burned 50+ structures. It hasn't really made news too much because they're all second to fourth homes for rich people really. It's approaching 50,000 acres burned, and is only 15% contained or so. Nothing like burning into a full fledged city like Colorado Springs though, that's crazy.

It's going to be a crazy year out west for fires, for sure. We're way ahead of normal numbers of fire incidents, and the plants and ground are ridiculously dry for this time of year. It'll be interesting to see what happens come August and September, the normal fire season.

*edited structure fire number to the most recent "accurate" number I could find.

One does not simply walk into Colorado.

Glad you checked in, Shel. It occurred to me yesterday that I know someone in that area - you and Taamar! Glad you're safe.

There was a grass fire across the Arroyo a couple of nights ago that I could see from our house. I called 911 (along with about a hundred other people, apparently). I'm hoping everyone up here is diligent about their brush clearance, and all the idiots with fireworks stay down on the asphalt this year. This could be a bad year for us, too.
