I find it amusing that GW2 is claiming no holy trinity, and yet, one of the developers was seen on a panel at PAX saying "our game promotes playing with your friends, not alongside your friends."

I'm really confused how that works when they go out of their way to spread the roles out to each player and all the healing, from what I understand, is self-only. That sounds like the very definition of playing alongside your group, not with them.

I'll be the first to admit that I haven't been following press or announcements about the game very closely, so it could work, for all I know. I'll see after it's released, I guess, and I get to talk to some folks.

Yeah there's no dedicated healers and no real tanks as far as traditional MMOs. Everyone does DPS, Control and Support to a degree.

No taunts, agro is based on proximity in large part. Objective is to avoid damage not take it and get healed. Casting bubbles or dodging out of the way, someone else coming in to take agro etc. You cant even target an ally to heal them or buff them. Article on it here:

One of the best ways to explain this is with an analogy. In a first person shooter there can be a variety of weapons, from sniper rifles to rocket launchers to machine guns and shotguns. No one looks at these weapons and says, “They’re all the same, they all just do DPS.” Why should an MMO be any different?

That is why we want to eliminate things that we felt were burdens on the game such as:

Group LF Healer/Tank…
Party wipes when you lose the wrong person.
Watching the interface instead of the world.
Playing with people because you have to, not because you want to.
Being stuck in the same combat patterns over and over again.

We’re counting the days until the first public Guild Wars 2 Beta Weekend Event, which begins on Friday, April 27, at noon PDT (GMT-7) and ends on Sunday, April 29, at 11:59 p.m. PDT (GMT-7). Hundreds of thousands of players from around the world will get their first taste of Guild Wars 2—and rest assured, we’ll be playing alongside them!

There are a couple important things you need to know about this Beta Weekend Event:

The only way to absolutely guarantee your access to this or any future Beta Weekend Events is to pre-purchase any edition of Guild Wars 2.
Customers who have pre-purchased the game will receive an e-mail next week with instructions on how to download the client and participate in the Beta.
This is a public event, which means that you’re not bound by a Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA). So go ahead, feel free to take screenshots, shoot video, blog, tweet, write, or compose a rock opera to share your Guild Wars 2 experience with the world.

I am trying to keep my personal hype levels to a reasonable intensity. I really am looking forward to playing it though.

That might be one of the most useless and stupid error messages I've seen recently.

Thankfully, it was temporary. An hour can feel like a long time when you're waiting to get back into an MMO, though ;)

GW2 release date: August 28th

http://www.arena.net/blog/announcing-th ... aunch-date

Quote:
Earlier this year I told you that 2012 would be the Year of the Dragon, and that the next few betas would help us nail down our actual launch date. Well, after the results of our latest stress test, I’m happy to announce that we’re ready to nail down that date.

Guild Wars 2 will officially launch on Tuesday, August 28th.

This is an incredibly momentous day for the studio and for me personally. This journey began in 2007 when we first announced that we were beginning work on Guild Wars 2 and that you wouldn’t be hearing from us for a while. Then in 2010 we unveiled our manifesto for Guild Wars 2: a living breathing online world that challenges convention, that’s designed for fun instead of grind, and that brings social interaction to a new level in an online world.

Through all the long hours and hard decisions, we were bolstered by the knowledge that we were not in this alone. All along you’ve been there for us, cheering us on, supporting us when we needed it, testing early versions of the game, and above all, giving us your honest feedback every step of the way. Guild Wars 2 is a better game for all of the work that our community has put in.

Now that we’re just two months away from launch, we’ll spend our remaining time optimizing, polishing, and balancing the game, to ensure that we provide you with the best launch-day experience we possibly can.

To this end, I’m excited to announce that our next and final Beta Weekend Event is planned for July 20-22.

These are exciting times; we’re on the cusp of a new era in online roleplaying games, and we’re glad you’re on this journey with us.

We’ll see you in-game.

I poked around some on the beta weekends, and have it pre-ordered. Guild Wars is a game I feel okay dabbling in, thanks to the subscription-less model. I generally feel like I'll get my $60 out of it regardless, and whether I get sucked in or not will justify (or not) expansions. In any event, I was having fun with my Ranger and Elementalist. Need to try a Warrior out, too.

So I figure it'll probably stave off my fantasy RPG cravings until I see whether EQ Next will be awesome. However, MechWarrior Online and Planetside 2 will be putting up strong competitions for playtime from me, I think.

The wife and I have pre-ordered and are eagerly awaiting early start.

We have had a lot of fun in the WvW. I would guess we'll be spending a fair amount of our game time in that mode.

We tried not to play too much of the PvE in order to leave the majority of that content unspoiled. What we did play (human lands: entire noob map, Asura and Norn lands: ~half of their respective noob maps)was fun, so we are looking forward to that too.

I'll be playing this and have pre-purchased. One of the best games I've seen come out for quite a while.

I will likely buy it. Wife played it more than I, but I liked what I saw.

I never played part one past a demo preview but I just caved and preordered part two. The skill-based combat among other things were too much of a draw for me.

I've been trying to see if there's a way to preload the game but I can't even log into their website. Seems like it's getting slammed, I keep getting timeout errors. The login thing especially sucks ATM because apparently you can't even browse their forums without logging in, so I'm sitting in some kind of purgatory right now.

My wife and I are going to start on Henge of Denravi server.

Look for servers opening as early as 9pm Pacific tonight, though the official time is midnight Pacific.

Wife and I haven't decided on what server we'll be on yet. She has some friends at work who have decided on a server, likely we'll be on whatever that is.

I'm on Henge of Denravi too with PRX guild. This is DAOC 2 with better pvp rvr and pve. I am cautiously optimistic!

Got to level 20 or 21 last night and got in some WvW. Seems like it could be fun after people start learning how it all works and start to function together. Right now though I have no idea where to go. In an hour I managed to get four badges of honor and did a LOT of running. Which brings me to my next point... this game needs mounts. The travel time in WvW is almost enough to make me not want to bother.

Really enjoying the unexpected world platforming and hidden areas. It's not like WOW where you have some crazy obvious cave opening joining two areas... Yesterday I went down into a lake and in between some ruins there was a tiny opening to another area not on the map that had a dynamic event in it. Pretty awesome when you feel like exploring is actually rewarding.

What are you all playing?
