My issue is that following the pattern that Microsoft has been a slave to for years... this OS will suck.

Windows 3.11 awesome, Windows 95 sucked, Windows 98 Awesome, Windows Me sucked more than a two dollar whore trying to get an 8 ball of coke, Windows XP was awesome, Vista sucked, Windows 7 is awesome. Therefore patterns taken into account: Windows 8 is going to suck a lot.

I am not considering 2000 because that was still technically a networking OS.

Now what about the rumors I have heard that a basic no frills OS load of Windows 8 is just like windows 7, but to get all of the cool **** out of it you need to link it to your Live Account? Is there credibility to this?

Well a lot of the new stuff requires online functionality of some kind, so it's not crazy for MS to require a login. It doesn't need to be your current Live account if you don't want it to be, but using an already existing account would certainly be preferable IMO.

Computer setting syncing, needs an account
Social game stuff and XBL, needs an account
Buying stuff from the MS store, needs an account

Those three seem pretty self explanatory as to the "why"... I'm not sure what else you NEED the login for off the top of my head.

I will say that it's nice logging into your computer for the first time with a Live account, and already having your People/Calendar/XBL applications set up, populated and ready to go.

Can I run XBLA games on Windows 8? For example, Minecraft for Xbox360?

If the developer publishes it to Windows 8, yes.

The Minesweeper achievements I got on my Windows phone a few months ago seem to be tied to the same version of Minesweeper I got through the MS Store on Windows 8.

Whether or not you'll be able to do something like continue a 360 save game on the pc platform, I have no idea. That might be the direction that MS is headed with the Xbox cloud saves, though.

Ok I doubt they'll publish Minecraft for X360 to Win8 since there's already a PC version of Minecraft.

It's certainly within the realm of possibility to consolidate them.

Why not? Some people don't like that there's no start button/menu. Why not enable that as an option out of the box? Maybe a choice "Standard Windows Interface" "Tablet Metro Interface".

Because you can already access all of your programs through the metro interface in a more easily scanned view that takes the same amount of clicks to reach.

Except the metro interface is hideous. ;) I *like* my clean desktop and start button etc.

Its fine for tablets and phones(IMO), but for a desktop... not so much.

Been playing Darksiders II and now Guild Wars 2 for long stretches and no performance issues, even multitasking. Works great.

Absolutely. I have the icons I use most often way out of the way in the corners of my desktop.

If I can have a win7 desktop in win8, I'd think about it. But I don't like a bunch of crap on the screen that's just going to be covered by the windows that I'm actually using to do things anyway. Its easier for me to have the start bar functionality than to have to move what I'm working on to pull up other things.

But I'm a dinosaur I guess.

Yes you are totally alone in that

Where is the fun in that :(

So I think this winter I will be getting a new laptop. It's pretty much a foregone conclusion that it will be running Windows 8; I am at a loss in terms of manufacturers though. Since it has been... 5 or 6 years since I upgraded I am not sure what the market looks like now. Any suggestions? (Don't want a tablet or a tablet/convertible).

There's going to be so much new hardware coming out around November that I find it hard to even speculate on what'd be best ATM.

"Laptop" covers a wide range to hardware too. What are you looking for? An ultrabook? small, thin, light? or a high powered gaming capable machine?

As much as I love Sony, I don't want a convertible.
