Yea, unfortunately, it's not what I'm looking for.

Right now I'm using a fairly generic 7" neoprene sleeve I found on Amazon. Id like to find a low profile case that will function as a stand in either the horizontal or vertical position. I would like it to be a 'smart case', although that isn't absolutely necessary.

There are some reviews of the 'official' case on XDA, and from what I'm seeing there, i'm not impressed.

I had the same complaint several devices ago.

Then I realized that while I had a lot of local stuff stored, I never actually used any of it (now that my music is in the cloud).

Unfortunately cloud storage to me is not viable with the stupid low data cap's cell companies have. Right now I used between 4-5gb of my 5gb limit on my phone and maybe 500mb of the 1gb limit on my tablet (it's usually tethered to my phone), if I were to stream all my music across the cloud I could easily see that number going upwards of 20gb of data a month as virtually anytime I listen to music on any of my mobile devices i'm not within wifi (about 8 hours a day average which actually works out to over 28gb with a 256kbit/s mp3 encoding).

Ugh, this official case is shitty. Highly not-recommended.

Floppy rubber flap with no attachment to keep it closed?

Edit:
Here is a link to the N7 Accessories subforum over at XDA.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1676

Apparently a bunch of bootleg cases and stands have made it to places like Amazon with "Nexus 7" names, but are just generically re-branded kindle crap.

I'm looking for something fairly specific. My requirements are

-- Maintain a low profile (doesn't add a lot of bulk)
-- has a protective cover for the screen, preferably of the 'smart' variety
-- can function as a stand in either horizontal or vertical orientation

Right now I'm just living with a generic 7" tablet sleeve I found on amazon. It's a tad loose, but it serves to protect it while its in my bag.

I've read that there may be a desk dock that supports the pogo pins coming in the future. Depending on features and aesthetics, I may be interested.

Ayup. Floppy silicone, with a slicker finish than even the original Nexus 7 backing, ugly color, weak "hinge," loose fit. What adds insult to injury is that the damn thing feels like it nearly doubles the weight and density of the device. Blech.

So this would be ideal to say, check forums, listen to podcasts, watch videos... all in a very small and mobile, wire free package? Because that's what I need.

This is superior to the Kindle Fire because of speed and resolution or are there other things I should be aware of?

it's superior to the Kindle Fire in every possible way.

"Wire Free" is a bit iffy. The only connectivity is via WiFi. So no mobile broadband.

As long as you have WiFi handy, or a device you can tether it to, then it is exactly what you described.

Some decent cases finally coming to the market.

Going to risk $20 on this being exactly what I'm looking for.

After reading the Amazon reviews, I think I'm going to shop around.

There were some complaints about the cover not opening out completely flat... I'm going to keep looking around...

BTW, it sounds like there is a 3G version of the N7 on the horizon...

I got sick of reading and watching reviews, and just went ahead and ordered this. I'll post about it here once I get it.

Well, I finally received this, and I must say, I'm pleasantly surprised.

Here is the link again
Poetic Slimline Portoflio Nexus 7 SmartCover

The main complaints in the reviews said that the front cover didn't wrap around the back completely, which meant you couldn't lay it flat with the cover open. I didn't find this to be true. The cover does wrap around the back, and the device lays flat with it open.

The case fits well, is light, and doesn't add much bulk. The smartcover is really nice to have, as it sleeps the screen when it's closed.

All of the buttons are still accessible through the back case.

The magnets that hold the flap down do a good job of holding it snug.

The front cover is heavy duty enough to protect the screen from fairly serious impacts. It would work well to protect the device if it was in a backpack or briefcase.

The one minor nit I have. The front cover does not function well as a stand when it's folded back in a triangle. It might after the cover is broken in. As it is, the folds are a bit too stiff, and the devices just slides down flat if I try to use it as a stand. This is not a problem for me, as I almost never have this device in landscape mode anyway.

For what it is (a protective smartcover), this is well worth the $20 I spent on it.

Edit to add:
I should note that I ordered mine from that link on Amazon on Sept 4th, and didn't receive it until the 20th. So if you are in a hurry, you might try a different place to buy.

Nexus 7 gets a refresh.

More memory, 3G version available, and a few other minor improvements...

Did the cover break in properly to serve as a stand? The one I have for my Kindle still doesn't serve that role very well.

I love the Poetic cover I bought. It's usefulness as a stand is marginal. It works, but it's a bit fidgety. But overall, as a protective case with the smartcover, I'd give it an 8/10.
