Recently, while I was working in the flower beds in the front yard, my neighbors stopped to chat as they returned home from walking their dog. During our friendly conversation, I asked their little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up. She said she wanted to be President some day. Both of her parents, liberal Democrats, were standing there, so I asked her, "If you were President what would be the first thing you would do?" She replied... "I'd give food and houses to all the homeless people." Her parents beamed with pride! "Wow...what a worthy goal!" I said. "But you don't have to wait until you're President to do that!" I told her. "What do you mean?" she replied. So I told her, "You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and trim my hedge, and I'll pay you $50. Then you can go over to the grocery store where the homeless guy hangs out and give him the $50 to use toward food and a new house." She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked, "Why doesn't the homeless guy come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the $50?" I said, "Welcome to the Republican Party." Her parents aren't speaking to me anymore.

There are many rebuttals to this out there...do you have one?

I think the simplest is that most liberals don't want to give food and houses to homeless people.

Also most homeless people have mental problems or other problems preventing them from doing that kind of work, or at least preventing people from wanting to hire them.

Also, there are a lot of Republicans out there. Many of them have houses and lawns. How many do you think are hiring homeless people to help take care of them? I wouldn't say wanting to hire homeless people makes someone a Republican.

I suppose a few of the rebuttals are how does Homeless Bob know about the grass cutting opportunity; how does Bob get from the grocery store to your home (does he pay $25/$35/$50 to get a taxiride from the grocery store to your house and back?); $50 dollars doesn't get Bob a house (but if liberals took $50 from everyone in the city he could).

I think the most obvious rebuttal is that it's an adult talking to a little kid, who just knows that it's good to be kind to others and has no idea what the office of President entails. It would be equally silly if it were the other way around.

It still perpetuates the stereotype that failure in society is 100% due to the laziness of those who have failed, without exception.

As opposed to the stereotype that nothing is ever anyone's fault.

I only seem to encounter that sterotype when speaking to my liberal friends, usually right after they attribute an argument to me, debunk it, and claim some sort of victory. That and the Libertarians should move to Somalia argument.

Many homeless people have illogical thinking that makes them not want to work. Many have ideological laziness, as in they place value on doing nothing. So other people have to support them.
