Besides, if a Jedi's hand needs protection, it's going to need it at the wrists, not the fingers. Lightsaber-wielding opponents play for keeps when they disarm.

If memory serves, the cross-guard was not put on swords to protect the user's hand. It was on there to keep you from stabbing a sword too deeply and thus losing it in a fight. Putting a "laser" cross guard would just make it stab that much deeper.

Depending on how the rest of the lightsaber was formed, it would be nice to have something to keep my hand or finger from slipping off the end while wielding it.
