It does mean that the same adapter can not be used with an iPod, which is a negative. I don't know what benefits the new adapter offers, because I don't follow smartphones. I have an iPod and a tablet, so all I care about is a cheap phone I can use to call AAA if I break down on the highway.

The new dock connector will be on all devices. It's already making its debut in the new iPod Touches and Nanos, and is also expected to be in the Shuffle due to its size.

Will also more than likely make it to the iPad next update.

In that case, the reason the adapter doesn't support video and iPod out is likely because the intent is for that to be done through a wireless connection.

Which, quite frankly, is a dubious choice.

Personally, because I'm a rabid iHater, I hope they do.

I am not the rabid Apple hater; but this is funny... Apple sues the crap out of Samsung, for infringing on their patents, and then turns around and does the same thing to Samsung/HTC...

That takes some cajones.

Which would be fine if the iPhones haven't always been about the fusion of phone and iPod.

Basically, they've made an iPod that's not compatible with current user base's devices.

So basically you are telling us to disregard your opinion? :D

When I bought my first PocketPC phone I knew exactly where I wanted that technology to end up. A replacement for a laptop. A single device that does everything so brilliantly that I have no need to purchase single-use devices.

Friends don't let friends buy single-purpose devices.

It's because the historical approach was wires and the new approach is AirPlay.

Honestly, we have a dock but play all our iPod music over airport express.

YMMV

The iPhone has been on the market for five years, now. Development would have begun a few years prior to that. New technologies have come about that either did not exist, or were in their infancy when the iPhone was first conceived and designed.

The fusion of the phone and the iPod was five years ago. If I'm an Apple engineer, I'm more interested in why the device is seeing use today. What are people actually doing with this device? That's what I'm going to design around. As it turns out, the iPhone is being used for internet browsing, email, social media, video chat, and GPS location. Those are going to be my priorities when I make a new iPhone.

This device, for whatever it's going to do, I want it to be able to do it while it's in your hand or in your pocket. Putting it in a dock to control your stereo is counterproductive. If it can control your stereo from inside your pocket, that's a different story. However, if the device is going to control your stereo over a wireless signal, then the data/charging port doesn't have to do that.

Not if I want it to sit on my desk and charge and play my music through the dock's speakers. ;)

If Apple had included wireless charging like they should have, you'd be able to charge and control music with AirPlay from anywhere in your casa.

Or maybe just using Micro USB like the rest of the civilized world. ;)

Using a cord over wireless is not more civilized. In fact, most people are upset about this because they don't want to be more advanced. They don't want to buy AirPlay accessories, they want old school cords and docks.

Go back to your cave, caveman

I don't want to have to buy three expensive charging pads. 1 each for my home, office and car. Especially when my phone doesn't hold enough charge to run a music player or internet browser for a trip from LA to LV. Or is down to 10% battery life by lunchtime.

Granted, that's probably a factor of my D3 sucking ***... but still. There are nothing wrong with cords in and of themselves.

I'm sorry your phone has battery issues. I hear Android has problems with that, sometimes. I frequently listen to music for my commute and entire work day, 10 hours or so, and just charge my phone at night while sleeping.

It's not Android that has battery problems. It's crappily designed Android hardware.

My Galaxy Nexus goes thirty+ hours on a regular basis without breaking a sweat, including streaming music on my commute.

Yeah, its probably my phone more than anything to be fair.

However, I don't want to have a situation where I have one and only one place to charge the bloody thing. Expensive cables and wireless charging pads are a good way to ensure that.

However, its likely moot since I'm not going to get the i5 or the Loomia 920 in any event.

The Motorola Droid series has not been kind to me with battery issues.

I'm going to replace it this weekend.

What is the audio quality of that? Bluetooth was always super terrible but I've never tried Apple's doodad.

Quality is fine, AirPlay has the capability to play games/movies on your TV from your device. Music isn't an issue.

My Blaze gets good battery life, and my tablet is also so far.

I heard an interview yesterday with a guy who has $1300 worth of accessories for his iPhone 4, including pricey high-end sound docks, etc...

Needless to say, he's more than a little unhappy...

I'm slow, but why do you need more than 1 adapter?
