Awesome! I'm not quite so sanguine about the potential response of some Hindus though. Religious violence/riots by Hindu mobs in India isn't exactly unheard of.

I don't recall it ever being over an offensive image though.

It also rather highlights the problem, because the most we can say is that for one of the four religious groups in question, violence "isn't unheard of." The response of these mobs to this film is really not exactly at the level of "not unheard of" but more on the level of "if we'd known about the film, we could have seen trouble brewing" (us, meaning us here on this board).

The following link is not work-safe.

http://www.theonion.com/articles/no-one-murdered-because-of-this-image,29553/

Quote:
WASHINGTON—Following the publication of the image above, in which the most cherished figures from multiple religious faiths were depicted engaging in a lascivious sex act of considerable depravity, no one was murdered, beaten, or had their lives threatened, sources reported Thursday. The image of the Hebrew prophet Moses high-fiving Jesus Christ as both are having their erect penises vigorously masturbated by Ganesha, all while the Hindu deity anally penetrates Buddha with his fist, reportedly went online at 6:45 p.m. EDT, after which not a single bomb threat was made against the organization responsible, nor did the person who created the cartoon go home fearing for his life in any way. Though some members of the Jewish, Christian, Hindu, and Buddhist faiths were reportedly offended by the image, sources confirmed that upon seeing it, they simply shook their heads, rolled their eyes, and continued on with their day.

The KFC was in Tripoli, Lebanon, not Tripoli, Libya.

I also like this tidbit from the BBC link:

Quote:
The US embassy in Brussels has been evacuated

Evidently the Belgians can't maintain order either. Probably are too busy trying to find some reason to blame this on America and have a trial in some International Court of Small Countries Pretending Their Political Views Are Law or something.

If this story is accurate, the Administration's actions are completely unacceptable:

LA Times wrote:
Administration officials have asked YouTube to review a controversial video that many blame for spurring a wave of anti-American violence in the Middle East. The administration flagged the 14-minute "Innocence of Muslims" video and asked that YouTube evaluate it to determine whether it violates the site's terms of service, officials said Thursday.

Egypt's government is sympathizing with the terrorists and is using the attacks for political gain. Screw them and take away that $2 billion in aid. It is time that we understood that radical islamists are now in charge in Egypt and stopped pretending otherwise.

Libya is a completely different story. The government isn't strong enough to fully defend against these kinds of unexpected attacks, but they seem to be doing what they can to prevent them, and there doesn't seem to be wide support in the country.

Isn't the Muslim Brotherhood coming to the White House next week?

Egypt is a perfect example of why "propping up dictatorships" is a stupid criticism of our foriegn policy, past or present. Frequently the dictator is better than the alternative.

Dictators are pretty good at propping themselves up, we could save a boat load of money by letting them roam free in their natural environment.

Seems to me one either believes that democracy is the best form of government, or one doesn't...

I used to think that, now I'm not so sure. It could be their culture and society is too primitive for democracy to work correctly. I scoffed at that opinion back when people criticized Bush's policy on spreading democracy by saying things like that, but now I'm not so sure they're wrong. Do you have to have a certain critical mass of literate and educated voters for it to be successful?

I don't pretend to be certain on this issue, it is just the past several years have made me question it. The absolute ease with which they were manipulated into violence is extremely disturbing.

I watched the trailer, it is pretty damned offensive. Then again it was meant to be.

Still, I wonder how long it is going to be until some countries start shipping their Muslims back to their countries of origin.

Tautology much?

I don't think there is any one universal "best" form of government. Democracy can suck goat balls under certain circumstances.

In particular, it doesn't do well with angry Germans who have lost a war and are in terrible economic conditions. So far, it also seems not to work well in tribal cultures with mediocre education and a religion that is incompatible with the idea of a distinct secular political process.

Nice...

http://pjmedia.com/tatler/2012/09/16/fr ... f-muslims/

Quote:
On August 17, Victoria Nuland, spokeswoman for Hillary Clinton’s State Department, issued the following press release in response to the two-year prison sentences handed down to Nadezhda Tolokonnikova and Yekaterina Samutsevich for desecrating the altar of a Russian Orthodox Cathedral:

“The United States is concerned about both the verdict and the disproportionate sentences handed down by a Moscow court in the case against the members of the band Pussy Riot and the negative impact on freedom of expression in Russia.

We urge Russian authorities to review this case and ensure that the right to freedom of expression is upheld.”

Quote:
By contrast, on September 14, Clinton, speaking about the YouTube video “Innocence of Muslims” that allegedly sparked the protests and attacks on U.S. diplomatic posts, sang a very different tune:

“The United States government… absolutely reject[s the] content and message [of the video]… to us, to me personally, this video is disgusting and reprehensible. It appears to have a deeply cynical purpose: to denigrate a great religion and to provoke rage.”
