So out of these phones, which one is the most physically durable?

If you want durability:
http://www.casiogzone.com/

That one. It may not be the fastest, or the most shiny, but it has durability in spades.

Durability is not a key design objective for these new devices. They are designed (and expected) to last two to three years (or so). The technology refresh is so fast on them that the designers don't expect them to be used for longer than that.

This applies to just about all of the smart devices/tablets out there...

You can buy protective covers, screen protectors, etc... that should help them survive some abuse...

If you are buying a device you expect to last more than a year or two, make damn sure it has a replaceable battery.

This. Love the Otterbox. I've had mine for a year and a half it still looks new(the phone).

I mean durability more in terms of ability to survive if I carry it in the field. Aside from the GPS use, a phone is vital backup communication if the radio doesn't work. That's been a major advantage of the grandpa phone.

Grandpa phones are ideal for that sort of thing. Touchscreen Smart Phones (or even Qwerty equipped smartphones) are not ideal to use if you have to wear gloves, or work in environments where your hands are dirty/oily/sweaty, etc..

I have a cheap samsung flip phone with some prepaid minutes on it that I keep for emergencies. It stays in my glovebox, and only comes out once a month or so for a recharge.

These phones serve 'emergency phone' purposes well.. they are small, light, easy to use, and the battery life is weeks instead of days or hours...

Yeah, definitely. Only problem is the lack of GPS and the difficulty of texting. Often, texting is better than talking due to noise discipline issues.

Seriously, see if you can find a G'Zone. It should be relatively cheap and durable.

That does look like it might be a good solution for DE, as long as he's on Verizon...

Back on the iPhone, it's JavaScript benchmarks are quite impressive. First phone under 1 sec, and almost 3x as fast as the 4s.

Im trying to find verification on this, but I heard on the radio there is a special chip in the new lightning cable/adapter that means you won't be able to buy aftermarket ones.

I could be done if this is true.
