Lesson learned the hard way:

.bat files are ok with
Code:
Set var1="one thing|leads to another"

but completely loses it's **** when you try
Code:
Set var1=one thing|leads to another

and if you've done the first, it is absolutely not OK to try
Code:
Set var1=%var1:"=%


Took me an hour to figure out why my .bat was crashing :(
