How the hell did this game fly completely under my radar? A first person supernatural stealth game set in a victorian era London-ish town with steampunk-ish elements. A game that was heavily influenced by Thief and Deus Ex.

Dishonored

I blame the cover art. I wrote it off multiple times as I walked past the booth at Pax. I guess I just saw another lame assassin's creed/prototype/whatever clone that was a giant yawn-fest for me. I wish I would have known.

Sigh. Oh well. It's got my full attention now. Any game whose developers are mega fans of Thief: The Dark Project will always have my ear.

I was gonna chime in with "How the hell did I miss this?", but then I recognized the trailer.

Watched it once, a couple of months ago. Forget how I stumbled across it, but I remember thinking it looked good. Hell of a time to be hitting the market, though. I'm still immersed in Guild Wars 2, just got into the Hawken Alpha, am considering picking up the Founder's package to get into the Mechwarrior Online Beta, and Secret World just went on a 50% off sale on Steam

Wasn't interested in this at all until I saw your post yesterday afternoon and saw the trailer on TV last night. Seems like Prototype + Assassin's Creed + Thief? I gotta try it.

Here's another nice overview of the game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O9MvnvplsaQ&feature=plcp

IGN review out: http://www.ign.com/articles/2012/10/08/ ... red-review

'buk, want me to change the title of the thread to something more relevant? :D

You might as well, for all the folks who absolutely must have their thread titles relevant to the subject matter. Maybe call it: Dishonored - Flying under Numbuk's radar

Or something.

Dishonored: Better at stealth than Numbuk realized? :)

Also, gamefly shipped this, can't wait for it to hit the mailbox, looks awesome.

So far this game gets the Numbuk Official Seal of Ogre Approving Goodness™. It definitely is making my old Thief nerve tingle in recognition.

Unlike Thief, just being in shadows is not enough (especially at higher difficulties). Sticking to the shadows may help you move from cover to cover more easily, but you really do need to hide your silhouette as much as you can if you're going to be stationary a while. It's like a blend of Thief and the new Deus Ex game.

I'm going through the game on Hard difficulty, and on top of which I've challenged myself to "ghost" as much of the game as possible (leaving everyone alive/conscious but slipping in and out as if you were never there). If I do have to take someone out, it will be non-lethally. Which is pretty much how I played the original Thief games.

Yep, you can go through guns and swords a blazing or go in for some sweet stealth kills. But ghosting brings up a whole different set of challenges. Patience, timing, looking for good distractions to cause, as well as alternate routes. On top of that, it's much more intense because you can never truly breathe a sigh of relief knowing that guards are still alive and mobile. It's fun! :D Plus the role-playing part of me knows it infuriates the bad guys far more to know you not only completed your objective and robbed them blind, but you did it without the guards on their payroll seeing a damned thing.

My only couple of gripes is that there doesn't appear to be a way to sheathe your sword and gun. And there doesn't appear to be a way to turn off floating objective arrows (I'll double check that one again later today).

You can sheath by holding down 'F'.

Also, I think you can toggle objectives in the journal, but I was a little confused by the interface and didn't mess with it much.

As for the game, loving it so far! I like to be stealthy too, but sometimes I save and then go crazy on an area, just to see how far I can make it in Leeroy Jenkins mode. Then, just reload and do it right. :D

What is F by default? The "use" key? F for me is strafe right (because ESDF is superior to WASD ;-))

I am glad to hear that it may be possible to turn off the markers. I know a lot of players can't play without them, but to me they are a distraction and don't allow for true exploration. Just like GPS for your car in a new city doesn't really help you get to know the city the way you used to. That, and I don't like my hand held too much in a game.

And yes, there is a certain bit of fun going berzerk in an "alternate universe" sort of way!

Yes, F is the 'use' key.

Okay. Started playing this last night and it's pretty sweet. Definitely has the Assassin's Creed + Thief vibe, I totally dig the graphics and the abilities are fun so far. I LOVE blinking behind someone and choking them out. It's so satisfying. Combat feels kind of clunky to me but I think that's more a symptom of my laptop keyboard being kind of cramped. I'm going to hook up a 360 controller later tonight and see how that goes.

I'm also really enjoying this one, I feel like they've really expanded your options with the powers. There's nothing better than setting up something elaborate and then pulling it off without a hitch.

I finished my first "assassination" mission last night and I really like the optional objectives so far. It was very satisfying to not kill the person, but render them to a life that might be considered worse.

Agreed, I found it very easy to just kill my target, but to spare them and condemn was much more satisfying.

TF2 kinda took over Dishonored playing for me, but I am sure I'll be back.

Yeah I had read that you can complete the game without making a single kill, including your assassin targets. That is what was most intriguing for me, as that's how I played Thief.

I like to RP playing this kind of game, even though it's completely single player. But I like it when a game is immersive enough to allow me to do it. There was one mission in the first Thief game where a noble hired some thugs to assassinate you. You tail them, find the noble's house, and the objective is to rob him blind. You can definitely do it by robbing and killing. However, I thought it would have been more fun to really shove his nose in his own dogshit.

You find out that he treats his staff and servants like complete and total crap, that he treats his pet burricks (sorta like mini dinosaurs) with far more care and dignity. In fact, those pets are his prized possessions. What I did? I left every single person alive and conscious (no knockouts). Not one of them saw me. I stole every bit of loot from the guy. And then, I went to his burrick pen and killed the burricks. Once that was done, I went to the noble, knocked him out, drug him to the filthy burrick cage and left his unconscious body inside with his dead pets.

He's now penniless, his pets are dead, he will awaken next to them in filth, and not a single person in the entire place will have even known something was wrong until he wakes up screaming with rage.

Sure, it's a simple video game where none of that happens. But in my head it did, and it was awesome. Knowing that Dishonored has kind of given me even more opportunities to indulge that side of me only makes me smile.

LOL. I try to avoid leaning and just rely on Dark Vision just because of that immersion-breaker.

A lot of stealth games incorporated leaning that didn't alert guards. I just view it as a subtle peek around the corner. Combined with a little supernatural shadow-hiding and just accept it as part of a skillset they have (if you've played any RPG, be it video or pen & paper, as a rogue/thief then you do this *ALL* the time).

Picked it up this past weekend because it was 50% off on Steam. Played for a few hours today and am quite happy with my purchase :)

I have to say, I'm really disappointed when a game like this doesn't release a modding toolkit (especially when it's published by bethseda.) I've bought many, many games on PC after playing through them simply due to amazing mod communities. Unfortunately, it seems like fewer and fewer games are doing it these days, I suppose because the fear the mods may take revenue away from their DLC/expansions/microtransactions/squeezing blood from the stone.

It is a bit sad. The Thief community especially are an example of a fan base that puts out content that is on par (and oftentimes better) than the original content. And they're a great example of some of those great modders being offered jobs for the very games they love. It's a win-win cycle for everyone involved, even the folks who just want to play content.

I think I'm going to give up trying for "Ghost" and "Clean Hands". Thought I had 'em last night but only got "Shadow" and "Mostly Flesh and Steel". Despite my several re-tries on most of the levels to ensure that I was getting both tick marks, the game seems convinced that I didn't completely avoid bloodshed :(

I really wish there were in-game indicators to let you know right away when you've slipped up. Only finding out at the end of the level and then having to play it out all over again is a touch spirit-crushing.

Unfortunately sleeping people falling to their death or people getting eaten by rats count as kills :/
