Vi's beauty (to me, at least) is in her ability to identify interesting subjects and craft an engaging narrative to discuss them and how they relate to other interesting tidbits, not the fact that I didn't know the subjects and tidbits before.

That and she has an awesome voice.

This is probably the most impressive steam locomotive video I've seen (and only 2:00). Union Pacific #3985, same loco as in the second video of my last post.

This time, she's all by herself... pulling 143 freight cars uphill at 35 mph.



This one actually makes me wonder a bit because normally these locomotives are used for excursions, not in actual revenue service. I've heard it stated that they do occasionally get used, but this is the first actual evidence I've seen of the practice. Perhaps its only in an emergency if no diesels are available in working order? Even if all those cars are empties being returned somewhere, that's an impressive load for a single engine.

The Philadelphia gladers ought to recognize this one. Strasburg railroad operates short steam excursions a little over an hour outside the city. Somewhere, my mom has pictures of me on these trains when I was a toddler in an engineer hat, and we kept going there as I grew up. Now that I ahve my own girls, we've been on these trains when visiting Grammy, although the 2 littlest still need to take a ride.

This particular video is of mighty number 90, Strasburg's most powerful locomotive. In her revenue career she was a freight engine pulling trains of sugar beets, and is capable of some 48,000 pounds of tractive effort, and is classified as a 2-10-0, or Decapod. Oonagh and Foamy, we'd love to meet you guys and take all the kids for a ride when we visit the area! You can even bring Elmo, Hannibal, and Uncle Fester along, but just let them know to keep their hands inside and behave or Grammy will give them a spanking! (The adults, not your kids)
