Are you noticing scratches, dings, and chips on your new iPhone 5? Don't worry, according to Apple's senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller, that's "normal."
The Apple-centric blog 9to5Mac.com reported that an iPhone 5 owner named Alex sent an email to Schiller yesterday noting that he loved his new iPhone 5, but has "been seeing some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone." The user asked what he should do about the problem and if Apple had any plans to fix it.
In a terse reply reminiscent of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' email interactions with customers, Schiller said, "Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. This is normal."

As for "holding it wrong" the camera lens was made out of a different material, presumably chosen for its durability. (Because it's, you know, a phone and is more likely to be dropped). Different materials have different indices of refraction. "You're holding it wrong," is a perfectly valid response. That's how physics works.

By the by, avid photographers should be aware that it is best to use a camera designed to be a camera for their serious photography. Rather than, you know, a phone that happens to have a camera in it.

In that case, Apple can't do **** about that other than use a different material. I mean, that's just a property of the aluminum they use. Now, since stress tests have shown that the aluminum offers better protection than the outer casing used by other companies, which do you prefer? Do you want your phone to be pretty, or do you want it to withstand stress?

This sort of thing would drive me absolutely insane. Really, I'm honestly curious how you can even stand it, much less enjoy it. I'm not trying to be an ***; I'm positively astounded that anyone actually likes this. It sounds like that Adam Sandler movie with the crazy remote come to life.

This is the first time I've ever been this genuinely displeased (as you put it) with an electronic device. I've had others that weren't all they were cracked up to be (3 different laptops in particular) but none that were so incredibly frustrating. It was almost all over earlier this afternoon when it started playing grunge rock (when it was supposed to be in silent mode) for no apparent reason. Eventually I determined this was how it told me some alert I really didn't care about anyhow was pending, but it took me almost 5 minutes to figure out what was doing it, by the end of which I was entertaining thoughts involving a tire iron.

I'm going to give it a week and if I haven't come to terms with it, I may suck down the restocking fee and whatever else and get a BlackBerry.
