Well, I have a 5 now. Will let you know how it is. Screen has a way warmer white point than my 3GS, which I dislike .

Yeah. It takes a little getting used to, but it's more accurate. It's the same color profile they're using for the iPad 3, which threw me for a bit of a loop when I first got it.

So far; Its the same as my 3GS, but faster, and taller, and thinner, and lighter, with a higher resolution screen. This isn't a bad thing ;-p

Battery life seems crazy low, but this may be because I had wifi hotspot & geofencing on (reminders that pop up when you arrive somewhere)

The turn by turn is better than my tomtom, despite the jokes - I used it for a few drives, and didnt look at the phone. Voice only was clear and useful, and the occasional wrong turn by me was almost instantly corrected - no 'recalculating...' pause.

Siri is just sad. Its just good enough to see the promise of it 'Siri, take me to moms' works. All sorts of random questions work. But the voice recognition is so poor it only gets it right about 1 time in 3. Not reliable enough to be useful, sadly.

Call quality, reception and speed seem good, but I changed carrier so its hard to put that down to the phone.

I think I like it. Still got 10 days or so to decide.

Ok. Its a great phone. I'd like to borrow a nexus to try, maybe I can convince a friend to SIMSwitch for a week, but this isnt going back.

One downside - wifi reception is notably worse than both my Retina MBP & my iPad. Not sure if that's just 'cellphones have small antennae', standard i5 behaviour, or a bad phone - anyone else got one able to comment?

Most beautiful phone I've had since my iphone1.

But; big but - 4 days of ownership and the edges are already slightly chipped. Its been in my pocket and on desks - not dropped or anything. It is very very very very unbelievably fragile. I'm gong to go into an apple store and ask if this is normal when I hit NYC. This surely should not be the case.

That said - I'll still keep it, as the phone is great, but I'm going to have to get it some kind of case. Unbelievable.

My mother hasn't mentioned any wear on her phone.

That being said, anybody who doesn't protect a smartphone or tablet with a $20-$30 case deserves what they get.

I have a case on order, but honestly, a metal edged device should not be chipping simply being in pocket. Im talking suit trouser and jacket pockets, without change or keys in them. Its absurd.

The chamfering? Yeah, that's a known thing. I popped on an Elago case and bam! Good to go.

This chipping on the edge thing?

Yea, apparently that's 'Normal for any aluminum product'.. at least according to Apple..

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,2817,2410170,00.asp

Quote:
Are you noticing scratches, dings, and chips on your new iPhone 5? Don't worry, according to Apple's senior vice president of marketing Phil Schiller, that's "normal."
The Apple-centric blog 9to5Mac.com reported that an iPhone 5 owner named Alex sent an email to Schiller yesterday noting that he loved his new iPhone 5, but has "been seeing some scuffs, scratches and marks throughout the band around the phone." The user asked what he should do about the problem and if Apple had any plans to fix it.
In a terse reply reminiscent of late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs' email interactions with customers, Schiller said, "Any aluminum product may scratch or chip with use, exposing its natural silver color. This is normal."

That's paint coming off.

As for "holding it wrong" the camera lens was made out of a different material, presumably chosen for its durability. (Because it's, you know, a phone and is more likely to be dropped). Different materials have different indices of refraction. "You're holding it wrong," is a perfectly valid response. That's how physics works.

By the by, avid photographers should be aware that it is best to use a camera designed to be a camera for their serious photography. Rather than, you know, a phone that happens to have a camera in it.

It's not paint. It's an anodised layer that, in my case, has taken a 1mm x 2mm x 0.4mm nip out of the phone.

Not good.

That picture looks like paint.

In that case, Apple can't do **** about that other than use a different material. I mean, that's just a property of the aluminum they use. Now, since stress tests have shown that the aluminum offers better protection than the outer casing used by other companies, which do you prefer? Do you want your phone to be pretty, or do you want it to withstand stress?

Holding it wrong also applies to the antenae snafu from the iPhone 4. Standard Apple Tech Support: "Sir/Ma'am have you considered you are holding it wrong?"

For the money Apple gets for those things (I've seen the subsidies numbers 0.0 ), the aluminum should not be chipping.

It is what it is... Get a case

If it were just coating I'd be... Well fine is strong, but unworried. A .4mm gouge is pretty significant. Neither my polycarbonate 3GS or aluminium iPhone 1 suffered this kind of fracturing.

It's 4 days old. It has not been mistreated. It needs to last at least 2 years. This does not bode well for longevity.

So yes; a different material or a different coating process would be good. I understand (from the interwebs, caveat lector) the issue is the anodised coating is thin, and has different tensile properties to the aluminium it's bonded to - so slight flex causes the aluminium to give and the anodised layer to crack, apparently pulling some of the underlying aluminium away with it.

If that's true it doesn't seem like a good decision.

All of it is hands off for me..

This sort of thing would drive me absolutely insane. Really, I'm honestly curious how you can even stand it, much less enjoy it. I'm not trying to be an ***; I'm positively astounded that anyone actually likes this. It sounds like that Adam Sandler movie with the crazy remote come to life.

This is the first time I've ever been this genuinely displeased (as you put it) with an electronic device. I've had others that weren't all they were cracked up to be (3 different laptops in particular) but none that were so incredibly frustrating. It was almost all over earlier this afternoon when it started playing grunge rock (when it was supposed to be in silent mode) for no apparent reason. Eventually I determined this was how it told me some alert I really didn't care about anyhow was pending, but it took me almost 5 minutes to figure out what was doing it, by the end of which I was entertaining thoughts involving a tire iron.

I'm going to give it a week and if I haven't come to terms with it, I may suck down the restocking fee and whatever else and get a BlackBerry.

So do you still hate your phone?
