Anyone have one? Thoughts? My daughter wants one for Christmas and I'm pretty sure I'm going to get it for her. After reading up on it on Amazon and checking out the reviews, I may get one for myself. I've yet to get any kind of tablet and I use my phone a lot for watching movies(netflix) and playing apps. 200 bucks is better than whatever the cheapest(new) iPad is.

I have one that I'm (finally getting around to) returning to Best Buy today...I wasn't impressed with it. Too sluggish. It's worlds better than the original Fire, but I require more responsiveness out of my tablets (I've been spoiled).

If you're looking for a budget tablet, and not going to consider an iPad Mini, I'd advocate a Nexus 7 over a Fire HD, honestly. It runs a bit better and while I love Amazon's ecosystem (shut it, Khross!) much, much more, the Google Play app store is far larger and you can still get Kindle books on it (even if you are reading them at [ugh] 16x9).

I've been disappointed in my first gen Kindle Fire to the point where I won't consider a Fire HD FWIW.

Just read this review.

http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-19736_7-57 ... t-for-you/

For my daughter, I think the Kindle is the way to go. Reading, apps and maybe netflix is all she would use it for.

For myself, I'm going to do some more comparing. The Nexus sounds nice though the 8G for the same price as 16G is disappointing.

I'll second Farskeee's recommendation of the Nexus. His Nexus is treating me exceptionally well.

I would third Nexus over Fire.

The Fire has the same godawful Amazon variant of Android if I recall correctly. My Fire 1 was a FAR better device when I stripped that crap off and put Jelly Bean on it.

The Nexus is a better device to start with.

The Nexus does sound better, and I may go with that for myself.

The Kendle HD though, would that be better an 11 year old girl who is strictly technology...average?

The Nexus is probably the better choice for anyone sans grandmas.

The Nexus is the better choice all around for everyone.

Yeah, still advocating the Nexus, even for someone who's only tech average. It's easy enough to use, and while I'd say Amazon if I could (and the physical construction of the device is better than the Nexus'), the Nexus is just a lot more open.

They've just dropped the price on the 16GB model to match the Fire HD, btw; it's now $199. For the extra $50, you can bump it to 32GB. https://play.google.com/store/devices/d ... ide-banner

Yeah I read that earlier. I'll have to give it some thought.

The only thing keeping me from going with the Nexus, is while it may be the better tablet, I won't be around for her when she has questions about how to do this or that. She lives with her mom in TX and I have issues trying to explain to them how to do stuff with their iphones.

Nitefox -- having the same interface is generally a plus for remote phone support. You can walk through something with her without having to fish for the right options. "Do you see anything that looks like a 'settings' menu? Tools? Yeah, try that. What are the menu options now?"

That's a good point. I run into this with my parents (and their damned Android phones) all the time. "I have no idea what you're looking at right now...is there something that looks like a [takes a guess at what Android icons are available]...no?" *sigh*

I own four different tablets, all still viable in terms of functionality... Original iPad 1, LG G-Slate, Asus Transformer Prime and Nexus 7. I also own the original Nook reader, but I don't really consider that a 'tablet' as it's only useful as a reader (and not for other media consumption).

Of all of those, I would recommend the Nexus over all of them based on my personal use of habits. The Transformer is still the most functional tablet out there (possibly excepting the new Windows stuff) because it's actually a viable laptop replacement (in a pinch) due to it's extended battery/keyboard docking unit. It's also far superior than anything I've used for playing tablet based games.

The main reason I grab the N7 in most cases over the Prime is it's size and portability. Carrying around a full size tablet is almost as much of a pain as carrying a laptop. The N7 is a lot easier to carry around with you.

I guess I would wonder if the size is important? Is 'portability' important to her? Or weight/size?

Not really Midgen. She has a laptop that she uses and doesn't have an issue with it.

I need to find out if there is a specific reason she wants the KFHD. It could be as easy as "my friend has one and I like it" type deal. She had a Nook but her mom busted it.

Its possible that she doesn't know about the N7. :)

I'd bet money on that.

If I hadn't had a KF1 that I had rooted 4.1 on, I would have tossed it for a N7 when they came out.

Well, if I hadn't also gotten my note 10.1.

If she explicitly asked for the Kindle Fire... I'd probably just go with that. It's not like there is that much of a difference between them. If you think about it from her perspective, getting her the Nexus could be similar to a kid asking for a Nintendo Wii and then their clueless parent goes out and buys them this because it was on sale and looks similar enough. I mean, I know it wouldn't be the same as that... but she's 11. I don't think she's going to be disappointed with the Kindle Fire HD. Just my 2 cents.

Amanar that Vii comes with Free Craps and Happy Tennis, what kid wouldn't be delighted?? Oh and you can buy Brave Kaka on the VC3 cartridges!

Nah, it'd be like asking for a Wii and getting an Xbox 360. ;)
