Last I read, the people behind the TV show said the existing 5 books would only provide 3 seasons of material. As to the rest of it, I've read the books enough now to know that Martin can't end it and wrote himself into a corner even God's machines can't fix.

The first sentence is so inaccurate it's almost not worth discussing. I don't believe those words were ever said by anyone connected to the show. It's even more ridiculous when you consider that it has already been announced that the 3rd book is being split into two seasons. The 1st half of which is currently being broadcast and the 2nd of which is currently being written.

I believe the 2nd sentence is just as inaccurate, but it is more a matter of opinion rather than fact so it is harder to disprove. He did write himself into a corner, but he has already written himself out of it.

Aegnor:

I'm really not sure it is. I've read the books and all the various and assorted other Westeros set things Martin has written. The primary novels have a major issue or three plot wise.

So is Jamie basically done being a badass now?

Jaime is in for an existential crisis. Everything he's ever been has just been taken away from him, and he knows nothing about how to be anything else.

It's actually one of the most interesting things GRRM ever did.

Jaime is mostly done being bad and done being an ***; the incident is what actually makes him a bad *** in the novels. It also provides a way into Jaime's decision making that was previously lacking and provides depth to the character that previously did not exist.

Yes, the loss of the hand helps Jaime's character development in a huge way.

Talya, I feel your pain about the seemingly senseless deaths, but I think that is largely exacerbated by the medium of a tv show, and by the fact that they picked such a well known actor for the part. Having read the books, it is easy to see that Ned Stark's death is the ignition point for the rest of the story. Without his death, most of the rest of the events would never have taken place. It fuels the readers hatred or admiration of the other characters in the story, and lets you know that this isn't a friendly fairy tale in which the good guy is always safe.

As I mentioned to Aegnor, I'm quite convinced that Martin is a student of Flannery O'Connor.

That was freaking perfect. Absolutely perfect.

"You speak Valyrian?!"

Kaffis, you should probably spoiler tag your post, even if it is inaccurate.

Sorry, I didn't think my comment that essentially amounted to
Spoiler:
"and now Dany's storyline bores me to tears from here on out"
was spoiler-worthy. Edited.

Except Kaffis isn't wrong ... the whole Mereenese Knot isn't that all these story lines converge in Mereen; it's that all these story lines converge in Mereen because Dany won't ever get to Westeros. As I mentioned in PMs, Martin has written this series into a corner he can't get it out of; nothing short of some spectacular deus ex machina allows Daenerys across the Narrow Sea. Nothing he can do makes her showing up at the Wall for the big show down and the Wall's end possible, because Dany can't reasonably extricate herself from Mereen. And then there's the fact that no one in their right mind wants her in charge of Westeros.

Never said he was wrong, Khross, you don't have to defend him. However, your defense justifies the request for spoiler tags to be used. Spoiler tags don't only exist for exciting stuff.

Wasn't replying to you as much as I was to Aegnor; I knew before I posted what I wanted to say needed tags.

Spoiler:
Yea...her mooning over that sack of **** Darrio is the highlight of her story. Because you can't believe this woman could be so **** stupid. Other than that almost nothing happening with her...until she takes off from the Slave pit with Drogon. There is a Targaryen headed toward the Iron Throne but it won't be her *** sitting in it.

She's mostly boring, I started only skimming her chapters for excitement as time went by.

Book 1 was the most evenly interesting her story was and part of that was because I was waiting for the other boot to drop on her idiot brother. The great thing about the TV series is I don't have to read her boring parts.

I feel kinda the same way about Sansa, she is a huge obnoxious air-headed moron and I hate reading all her parts. She's easier to put up with in the series, because I don't have to read her thoughts.

OMG YES!!!!

Spoiler:
Until the fifth book I could not stand reading her POV chapters. I want to throttle her at times. I am glad Tryion never boned her because we would have heard nothing but how horrible it was until the day Martin decides to kill her.

Spoilers up through aDwD
Spoiler:
I thought that her defeat of the Yunkai forces, and the taking of Meereen were awesome. The scene where she rides Drogon out of the Arena was also incredible. And I think there is quite a huge event for her when she gets back to Meereen.

And Khross, I don't think you have provided any sort of evidence for your assertion that she won't be able to extricate herself from Meereen. I can think of half a dozen ways she could do that.

"I want to protect you, I really do ... but it's so hard. I don't always know the right thing to do. I must know. That's what it means to be their queen, their ... their ..." and Missandei finishes, "Mother." <--- close but not exactly word for word from ADWD. Daenerys is constitutionally incapable of abandoning her freedmen; Daenerys has made an enemy of the world in much the say way the Tigers made an enemy of the world during Volantis's ascendant period -- a lesson Martin very carefully juxtaposed with the chapter Dany realizes she has to marry Hizdarh. Daenerys is going to die because her problem is Sansa's problem made big -- no one wants the barren dragon queen; they want her tenuously better than Tommen's claim to the Iron Throne. Then there's the fact that no matter which prophecy she follows: only bones and graves are in Dany's future. Of course, in 3000 pages, unless Martin drops Brienne, Sansa, Arya, leaves Jon dead, forgets about Samwell, and ignores Victarion and Euron ... he doesn't have enough space to get Dany to Westeros or the Wall. He needs years for the Dragons to be ready; he's paced himself into a corner and added too many POV characters and chains to resolve it in 2 books.

The only thing that is certain: Winter is coming. And perhaps its certainty is absolute -- maybe they do all lose, but nothing Dany can do allows her to save the world or reunited Westeros. The world is out of its author's control at this point.

So that was an awesome episode.

The whole Arya thing, asking if someone who's head was cut off could be brought back... /cry
And then her devastation when she finds out that Gendry is leaving too. Though some on twitter are going gaga over Gendry's "You'd always be 'My Lady'" line. They're interpreting it as him confessing his love for her (ick...she's a kid). Rather than she's a noble, sister to the King in the North, and she could never be family to a common blacksmith.

Sword fight was awesome. Shireen was awesome. Selise...what the hell was up with those fetuses...ewww.

Robb beheading Karstark was done perfectly. And it completely mirrored Theon's beheading Rodrick. The same pouring rain, and the same music. Awesome job.

Bathtub scene. Another homerun. The only thing I didn't like was that the end looked a bit awkward. I think they should have had him slip under the water before she reacted and pulled him out.

Tywin and his kids...yeah, father of the year. I did love Cercei getting slammed back to reality mid-gloat.

Overall an incredible episode. It didn't have the flash of last week's episode end, but it had a ton of great scenes.

I'm perplexed by the choice to write-out Willas. Loras isn't the Tyrell heir, which is why Mace doesn't care that he volunteers for the Kingsguard. Last week, I thought they were just embellishing Sansa's assumption when Margaery explicitly used Loras' name. But no, we're writing out the cripple suitor who would've been just fine being an off-screen name-drop.

I guess it got them the chance to write in another hot and sweaty Loras scene to use for Petyr to find out about the Martells' plans for Sansa.

In any event, the Queen of Thorns continues to be played fantastically on-point.

I think they were worried about the audience being totally confused by some unseen Willas. Which is really kind of understandable. There are enough characters mentioned (seen and unseen) as it is.

Writing out Willas doesn't work, because you need Willas to give Oberyn fangs.
