Figured I'd make a new thread rather than dump it all into the Iron Man 3 one, since new stories seem to pop up every day.
Marvel has been making short work of reclaiming their wayward properties from non-Marvel studios. Over the past couple of weeks, they've snagged
Blade from New Line/Warner Bros Daredevil from Fox Punisher from Artisan, and Ghost Rider and Luke Cage/Power Man from Sony
Of course, X-Men and Fantastic Four rights are still held by Fox, and Spider-Man by Sony, and neither studio is going to give up these very, very lucrative franchises. On the plus side, Chronicle's Josh Trank is rebooting the Fantastic Four (reportedly with Michael B. Jordan as the Human Torch, which would be awesome), and Sony's Raimi-less reboot was far better than its first try (Spider-Man 2 is pretty good, but Tobey Maguire remains a hideously poor casting choice for Peter Parker, and the less said about Spider-Man 3 the better). On the minus side, Bryan Singer is returning to the X-Men franchise after Fox accidentally managed to make one good X-Men movie (First Class) and then immediately kicked that filmmaker to the curb. And also insisted that the First Class sequel, Days of Future Past, tie in with the original crappy trilogy. Also, they're taking another shot at a Wolverine solo pic (trailer at the bottom of this post). Yaaaaaay.
Marvel's "Phase 2" films include the already-released Iron Man 3 (easily the best of the series, IMO), the Thor sequel (which is directed by a Game of Thrones helmer and looks to my eyes very uninspired; trailer at post's end), Captain America: The Winter Soldier (inexplicably directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, best known for their paintball episodes of Community; betcha can't guess what story arc they're tackling with that one), Guardians of the Galaxy, an out-of-left-field choice written and directed by the odious James Gunn, and capping off with The Avengers 2 by returning King of the Geek World Joss Whedon.
Marvel's plans may get a spanner thrown into the works as intense salary negotiations have begun for most of their house cast. Downey is hinting that his days as Tony Stark are done, and if he's to return, he won't be taking a pay cut (he received over $50 million for Avengers alone, while some of the cast received a comparatively paltry $200k). Chris Hemsworth has a hellacious diet and fitness regimen to undertake for Thor, and Scarlett Johanssen is refusing to back down from her salary demands as well. Marvel has proven time and again that it watches its bottom line like a hawk (hence the recasts of Rhodey and Bruce Banner, though the latter came about due in part to legitimate creative differences as well).
Personally, I was on a Doctor Strange kick this past weekend and re-read several takes on the character's origin (he's one of those lower-tier characters for which modern writers keep retelling an origin but never move past that), and I realized that I most vehemently demand a Doctor Strange film written and directed by Guillermo del Toro (the cinematic master of dark fantasy) and starring Benedict Cumberbatch as the titular, assholic metaphysician.
Now, once upon a time, director Joe Carnahan (The Grey, The A-Team, Smokin' Aces) put together a pitch reel for Fox on how he'd like to do a Daredevil film. Fox passed on it, but here it is, in all its funky glory:
Who knows? Marvel's made a lot of gutsy moves of late, and they've all paid off so far (though the directorial choices for Thor:TDW and CA:TWS make me nervous). Maybe they'll start an R-rated "Marvel Knights" line of films with those newly-reclaimed "dark" characters.

Cumberbatch is an amazing actor, but he can't do Stephen Strange. So, let's replace Cumberbatch with Gary Oldman and run with that?

Lies.
(Don't get me wrong, I love Oldman, but Cumberbatch is utterly perfect.)

Pay Downey whatever he wants. The franchise is doomed without him.
I heard RDJr. is only interested in taking percentage of box office take salaries now (big percentages)... it's an interesting idea, because it limits Disney's risk, but increases his potential upside when the movie breaks a billion in sales.

If I have to suffer through a talking space raccoon and a bloody Ent (with a wrestler cast, to boot), the least Marvel can do for me is make a Doctor Strange film.

Benedict Cumberbatch can play anything he wants to and play it wonderfully.

I so want that Carnahan pitch to succeed. Now that the license is away from the studio with the reputation for killing brilliant concepts with built-in fan appeal, maybe Marvel could take a risk, there. Daredevil's never been a flashy superpowers pre-teen-marketed character anyways.
That said, I'd watch the **** out of a Marvel Knights series off in its own little playground. Give me Daredevil and Heroes for Hire doing crossovers with each other. If you can give both to Carnahan to play around with that blaxploitation-esque funky 70's vibe he's got going in that Daredevil pitch, so much the better. I firmly believe the only way you can make Cage work is to be unapologetically self-conscious about his token black guy in the kung fu movie nature.
Ooh. Throw Matt Fraction and Carnahan together. They could do such amazing things together, I'm sure of it. Considering I hate kung fu movies, and Matt Fraction made me love Iron Fist.

Then pay it to him. He's propelled interest in the unified universe for people like me who only had the vaguest idea who the Avengers were five years ago. I think the ancillary characters would suffer if Iron Man had to be recast.

He can't play Stephen Strange; he lacks the requisite god complex.
Benedict can quite easily put on a god complex. (See Sherlock, new Star Trek villain, Sauron, Smaug)

The shield's got enough (bright) red to make it work, though, yeah, I don't think it would've been amiss to make the middle stripe on the shoulders red. Or maybe his boots a reddish leather.

"This is Cap's S.H.I.E.L.D. uniform (obviously) but for circumstances unknown (either it getting destroyed or Cap hating it), at some point in the film, Steve breaks into the Smithsonian and steals back his 40's uniform. So for all of us that loved the Johnston suit, Captain America will be back in it by the end of the movie. Sort of takes the sting away from this lameness." - See more at: http://www.joblo.com/movie-news/exclusi ... K25yz.dpuf
