The Glade 4.0

Anyone use them?



I've used a Wacom Intuos2 4x5 since I was a senior in high school. Tonight my girlfriend upgraded me with a belated birthday present to an Intuos4 small (6.2x3.9) and man it is a huge difference. I'm mainly going to be using it at work, but I almost feel like I want to trek it back and forth with me because unless I'm gaming I wont want to use my mouse anymore. The customization you can achieve with these things now is amazing.

Are you a fan?

I've wanted to get a Wacom tablet for a while now, but I'm not sure which one I should get. I do think they're neat.

I am not sure which one she has, but Lisa has a WaCom tablet. She needed it for one of her design classes a while back. I tried playing with the WaCom, but my skill ended somewhere after drawing crudely sketched genitals.

You know, they look fun ... Can you run them on an underpowered old desktop? Maybe a two-year old, probably underpowered tablet PC? I've kind of thought about one for doing D&D dungeons and maps, etc., for DM'ing. Can you get a small one and stitch stuff together, I assume?

I probably just made all the artists and designers on this board twitch.

They don't require a powerful computer at all, it's really just a specialized mouse. Plugs in USB just the same.

How much more responsive is the Intuos4 than their Bamboo series?

I tried one of the bamboo's a while ago, and was not at all impressed- the writing was not smooth, and very slow in response.

I was just trying to use it to mark up documents/take notes, and couldn't do much.

However, I also have heard that Vista and the new (2007) Word let you do a lot more with the pen than XP and Word 2003 did, so maybe that was my problem.

at $70, the Bamboo Pen looks nice, and I wouldn't mind an easy way to take notes on my laptop. I go through 4 or 5 papers a day, easily, and being able to make notes on them would be great.

Can't say how much more responsive the Intuos4 is than a Bamboo, never used that particular product line. The only spec I know for sure is that the Intuos line has twice as much pressure sensitivity. I've never had any input lag with any model, though, so maybe it was the OS environment in which you used it?

I'm not familiar with the Bamboo, but it sounds like it took the place of the Graphire, which was Wacom's other sub-$100 tablet.

The Graphire only had half as many levels of pressure sensitivity that the Intuos had (512 versus 1024, I believe). Also, the Intuos would detect the "tilt" of the pen, whereas the Graphire would not.

That being said, I ended up getting a 4X6 Graphire, because I couldn't afford an Intuos. It worked very well for me, but I was only using it for Photoshop and graphics related stuff.

I could never get used to those pen tablets, I have a Wacom graphire and it quickly ended up in a drawer, even back when I drew I just couldn't get the hang of it and liked my mouse better.
