There are TVs that do do (/snerk Doodoo) xbox stuff, and those TVs will become more and more common and the 360 will not be needed for anything but gaming. You also have to pay for the xbox service, but you can just connect these TVs to the internet and have access to Hulu, Netflix, and etc. Microsoft needs to focus on the gaming part, they're setting themselves up to lose this gen imo.

Who says they're not going to have great games as well as all that other stuff? Great games and an enjoyable gaming experience or cool tv integration with an excellent user experience with all of those other things?

I agree Wwen, and I love the quote from that video you posted (I'm paraphrasing):

"Microsoft is locking their box down to the most rich and elite, who can already own better devices to do the things they're trying to market xbox one as doing."

I don't know about you guys, but I generally have a tablet or laptop by me while watching tv or gaming (not to mention smartphone). Need to look something up, they're the go-to device. I'm not going to split my screen with internet explorer and try to yell voice commands at it to search something I can do in 10 seconds on my tablet. They're taking focus away from the only thing the box is good at doing. I have a badass gaming PC. I play most games on it. I play games on the xbox when it's exclusive, something I want to play with friends (who only have xboxes), or just something I want to kick back on the couch with and take a break from the PC for a bit.

I know Khross thinks there's a Sony bias here, but personally, I didn't buy a PS3 until the price had dropped twice, and I bought it as a blu-ray player. I've played a few exclusive PS3 games on it, that's about it. However, with MS trying to turn their console into a PC with game restrictions, no rentals, no used games, no trading, I am anxiously awaiting sony's response. If they come out with the absolute opposite stance, I'll probably be supporting PS4 next gen. It's also possible xbox will change it's tune entirely, but as of now, they're turning their console into a locked-down DRM-crazy gaming PC and charging you monthly for the convenience. I'll wait until they deliver more concrete details, but I've been an xbox live paid subscriber since beta, and this garbage is going to mean a call to MS to ***** and cancel my account.

Sony has controlling interest in the RIAA and the MPAA. Sony is largely the sole party responsible for the international push toward media rights as on-use rights. You're railing on MS, Darksiege, while Sony has been the one lobbying for the laws that make this seem like a good idea to MS.

I don't see the benefit there. How do you keep the hardware up to date? Essentially you are creating a static PC in a world that has a 6 month upgrade cycle. Aka another console.

Goddamnit.

Alright everyone, console gaming had a good run. Time to go back to the PC. Until they break it with even more DRM as well.

Regarding the move to downloadable codes and content and the related issues with buying and selling used games, does anyone know if there have been any anti-trust discussions in the media? Seems like you could argue Microsoft is leveraging its power in the console market for anti-competitive purposes in the content market (either by killing the used game market entirely or by stepping in and dominating it).

I think the response will be that Microsoft is welcome to control its own product, so long as it's not considered to have a monopoly on the larger console market itself.

Otherwise, there's no way the iTunes store has survived this long on iOS, because it's the same walled-garden control issue.

Seriously, Microsoft is the least of your worries on that front.

I'm so glad I don't do console games...

Khross:

MPAA membership includes Walt Disney Studios; Paramount Pictures; Sony Pictures; Twentieth Century Fox; Universal Studios; and Warner Bros Entertainment. From what I understand, with the possible exception of Paramount Pictures, the rest of the studios all rival Sony for influence within the MPAA.

Taly:

It does, but that doesn't change the fact that Sony is a big proponent of per-use rights and monetization in the media industry.

Lets all just not buy anything. We have to buy ammo and water jugs.

I dunno about that... I am considering getting a new gaming PC from Digital Storm.

Microsoft answers questions about:

• Online Connection Requirement
• Game Licensing, Sharing, Selling
Privacy

This part will enrage luddites:
Quote:
With Xbox One you can game offline for up to 24 hours on your primary console, or one hour if you are logged on to a separate console accessing your library. Offline gaming is not possible after these prescribed times until you re-establish a connection, but you can still watch live TV and enjoy Blu-ray and DVD movies.

This part is pretty neat:
Quote:
Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Man, just because a serviceman is stationed overseas and doesn't have a net connection doesn't make them a luddite. Just because I'm taking a 3 day road trip in the van doesn't make me a luddite. Sometimes it's just stupid to require something be connected to the net every 24 hours for absolutely no appreciable gain.

Since Sony has come out and stated there will be no online requirement for the PS4, and they appear to be taking the opposite tack of MS with the DRM (although they're still stating they're "leaving it up to the publishers") we shall see how it shakes out among the non-tech public.

The serviceman overseas is the only legit argument.

It has wifi, and if you don't have a phone or hotspot that you can tether to, you're a luddite. ;)

It's still ambiguous. They don't specify if it's 24 real hours in-between authorizations, or if it's 24 hours of gameplay time (since it checks on a per-game basis, I assume).

I guess I'm a Luddite, despite having 2 tablets and 3 phones between my wife and I, because f*ck paying Sprint $30 bucks a month to tether to their pos connection. Maybe if we ever get the mobile carriers here to not be complete dicks about data costs.

Only Luddites use Sprint. ;)

Who pays for extra tethering anyway? Free hotspotting is just a root away ;)

Hummm. I really only game at home. It isn't like my 360 travels with me. Not that I ever go anywhere. That whole, must connect thing doesn't bother me.

Manditory Kinect does.

Haha, true about the sprint. Went with them for unlimited data, doesn't do much if I can't get coverage anywhere.
