Is officially being shown August 2nd at SOE Live. Apparently it will be playable.

John Smedley tweeted this pic earlier today, which is apparently the first confirmed look at EQN's art direction:

Nice. I've been quite interested to see where they go with it.

MMORPG.com says that EQNext, what they saw behind closed doors, was the best thing they saw in all of E3.

http://www.mmorpg.com/showFeature.cfm/l ... 501/page/1

Quote:
Say what? You thought this one wasn’t at E3? Well, really... it wasn’t in any official capacity. But we were treated to an early look at what SOE has planned for the game’s unveiling in August and we were quite simply blown away by every little detail we saw. This is going to sound like a cop-out, but we can't say why we are choosing EQN as our Best of Show because we've been sworn to secrecy until the big debut in August. What we can say is that we saw grand plans for the world's largest sandbox and it was more than enough to stand head and shoulders above any game we saw at E3. When Sony pulls back the curtain later this summer, you will not be disappointed. EverQuest Next is this year's E3 Best of Show, and in just a couple months you'll all understand why. We promise.

Sandbox, huh? If they pull off procedurally generated (and thus unspoilable/guideable) quest content that could be pretty awesome. The thing that annoys me about modern MMOs is the carefully tailored story they're meant to take you through -- that everybody else experiences identically.

I think they mean sandbox in the sense of destructible environments, etc., things people can influence. Smed has gone on record talking about maybe a really powerful wizard player accidentally burning down a forest with a big spell.

You'd still need the procedurally-generated stuff in that case, since the "grand storyline" for everyone else would be jacked right up by the wizard burning down the forest - or else the forest would respawn quickly, leaving the wizard's actions as inconsequential as always.

The fact that they're even thinking "sandbox" fills me with optimism. The "progression raid" crowd is totally out of control across the MMO industry in general, and its high time MMO makers start making MMOs where players have to do something other than play the damage meter and the gearscore add-on.

The game is now officially named EverQuest Next

Also, rumors:

Spoiler:
Quote:
With respect to EQ Next generally I believe the following will be revealed at SOE Live. This is not my ideal game, it is the game I think they're making based on the various hints.

• Player creation tools by end of the year (as noted)
• Think Project Spark with an emphasis on general MMORPG design. Not Foundry (dungeons only, IIRC)
• Players will be able to create dungeons, quest chains, and outdoor areas (areas that connect to major zones).

Like PlayerStudio, this will be a for-profit enterprise. Player-Creators will submit their projects to SOE. SOE will quality control them, rejecting 95% to 99%, and putting the ones that pass QC up for sale for station cash. Older projects will eventually become free, but people willing to pay will get newer content sooner. There will be sometype of Gold Sub where you automatically get a bunch of new projects for the sub price every month. In addition to quests and the usual player studio stuff (new sword art, dishes, etc) artists will also be able to submit buildings or parts of buildings (e.g. Castles).

For the game generally - EVE with an EQ twist and a little bit of theme.

• EVE-like Megaservers with maybe 200 to 250,000 folks per server. Huge land masses for player housing and player content development.
• EVE-like Empire Space "safe" area. Freeport, Qeynos, various non-human cities, etc.
• EVE-like Security system where you can PvP anywhere, but killing in safe areas results in outlaw status. EVE-like multiple levels of security. Qenyos might have max security (I think it's 5.0 in EVE) maximum number of patrols, likelihood of being caught, Freeport might be 4.0 (Sewers 2.0), Places like the Karanas might be 1.0 - few patrols.
• EVE like null-space, large free-for all areas on the varous continents where players can establish kingdomes
• Mix of instanced and non-instanced content. Generally the better gear is coming from the non-instanced content, but there will be instanced content for one-off quests, class quests and the like. Also certain very high-population areas will have public instances (such as newbie areas and the largest towns).
• Complex Housing system allowing for the creation of playertowns in 0.0 Security areas, and establishing your own patrols.

It won't be completely sandbox - in addition to player-made quests:

• There will be newbie quests to run you around - with either a "?" or glowing halo over the newbie quest givers (SOE has to provide someway for people who only played WoW to get playing EQ. EQ players will put up with "?" for newbie quest givers, people who only played WoW are unlikely to put with arriving in a world and having no clue what to do)
• Class quests
• SOE story quests - a middling to fair amount of these often linked to former EQ power items to power up EQ nostalgia. E.g. Manastone Shard might be the result of a long series of quests. Ditto with JBoots. As noted, where the item was removed from game, some low power version with a similiar name will show up in EQN (WOTC did the same thing with lotus petals...).

There won't be
• Quest hubs (beyond the newbie area)

There will also probably be:

• Slow travel (non-POK books) except for the usual suspects. But there will be some cop-out option starting in late beta (like a once per day teleport or somesuch) to "play with friends" after people flip out and ***** endlessly on the forums.
• Flying mounts (Station Cash, Station Cash, Station Cash)
• VG like Crafting
• Something similiar to, yet entirely unlike, VG Diplomacy (e.g. faction manipulation as a seperate game aspect from adventuring but not with a card mini-game or if it is a card mini-game it is a completely different kind of card mini-game)

The Little Big Planet style dungeon maker sounds pretty cool. 99% should be rejected, but I bet the player base will make some real gems. Could be infinite content. I just wonder what the players would be allowed to give you as rewards, if they can create their own loot tables, or if Sony is going to be the ones deciding for the sake of balance.

I'd probably play that. What was the source, though, for the quote?

I can't find an actual source unfortunately. Well, we can still use the ideas as talking points.

With the EVE like features that are rumored, this is going to be a pvp only MMO? That doesn't sound like a good idea at all.

I'm starting to think that's just someone's wish list and not a real rumor. I don't see SOE going PVP-centric.

That was my other thought, too, yeah.

I don't think it would be EVE's level of pvp-centric, since other than massive supercapital battles, most pvp in EVE is really just ganking. That works in EVE (sort of, the difference between a pve and a pvp combat ship is a major encouragement to gank) mainly because your character and your ship are not the same thing.

In a fantasy MMO, it wouldn't work except as a very niche game. There would need to be some effective way to make ganking and griefing hard.

Okay, here we are... Almost time to find out what's true and what's bull. SOE Live starts today and there will allegedly be some EQN news tonight during the 7pm PST keynote. The official announcement / reveal is tomorrow at noon PST.

After the 90 minute announcement there are also 7 hours or so of panel discussions planned for the game, so tomorrow should be pretty exciting.

I'm looking forward to it. I'm hoping the MMO track at D*Con has an EQNext panel or two. Well, it'll probably be an SOE Panel, but here's hoping they've got fun stuff to show/talk about with EQ Next and it's not just all Planetside 2 stuff, since the community and direction they took the gameplay there didn't appeal to me.

So, if you go to their website, you see this image, with the text "Fantasy artist Gabor Szikszai has reinterpreted Keith Parkinson's original EverQuest masterpiece in the style of EverQuest Next."

Image

Here's the original box art for reference.

So, am I to assume they got rid of Erudites? If so, WTF?

Nah. They're classist against Enchanters.

Edit: They also ditched the Ogre for a Vah Shir.

But that's a pretty cool art style. The Dark Elf is kind of eye-roll worthy, but Firiona looks like an okay modernization. The dragon and Vah Shir look pretty badass.

If you assume that they got rid of Erudites, you must also assume by the same logic that they're getting rid of Halflings and Wood Elves... which I don't see happening.

Hard to tell if that little creature is a ratonga or a kobold... current rumor is on kobolds.

Negative. Homeboy with the axe is an ogre. Also, that Vah Shir is a Kerran.

My guess is that they got rid of Halflings and...I dunno, I think that other missing character was a Half-Elf. Looks like they're shuffling the Troll out in favor of a Vah Shir.

Maybe this isn't indicative of the final game's character options, but given the text on the website, I would guess that it is (or, at least, representative of their replacements). I guess we'll know tomorrow?

I see no reason to get rid of Halflings... Gnomes aren't in the picture either, but you can bet your *** they'll be in-game.

Okay, then they ditched Trolls, then, right?

Potato, potato on the Kerran. I went for Vah Shir because they were built much more heroically, proportion-wise. Though, I suppose calling it a Kerran means no Luclin if they're hewing close to EQ Original's lore as a starting point.

I like that there's still a definite sense of racial alliances in that picture.
