Nope.

Text summary (per DFK!): Don't buy next-gen.

As predicted:

Sony begins the 4k push with a fancy new premium service to boot!

Quote:
Sony has announced the details of a new home media device that brings ultra HD movies to your living room — if you're already on board with Sony's devices and services, and if you're willing to pay a premium for a rather slim selection of movies.

Ultra HD, or 4K, refers to video that is twice as wide and tall, resolution-wise, as 1080p content: 3840-by-2160 pixels, to be precise ("4K" refers to the nearly 4,000 horizontal pixels). And there are woefully few devices that support it right now — only a couple mega-high-end TV sets, two of which are from Sony.

And you'll have to have one of those two Sony TVs if you want to use their $700 FMP-X1 media player, first announced back in January; it's incompatible with everything else. You'll also be locked into Sony's pricey Video Unlimited service, at $7.99 each for 24-hour rentals of 4K content or $29.99 to buy as an online download.

The upside, of course, is that with a top-of-the-line 4K Sony TV and one of these players, you'll be enjoying movies in higher definition than anyone's ever seen them at home. That is, if there are any worth watching, and that's the next problem.

The 4K media player comes with 10 movies included, and they're not exactly all winners. From the latest Adam Sandler flick to the "Karate Kid" remake with Jackie Chan and Jaden Smith, it's a mixed bag, to put it kindly. Others are forthcoming, they say, but until then these are all you get.

But there's hope: "Taxi Driver" and "The Bridge on the River Kwai" are classics, and the high-definition scans of those 35mm film reels should make them those movies look incredible. These two, and other remastered classics to come, are probably the best (if not the only) reason to own a 4K TV and this player at the moment.

The FMP-X1 comes with a 2-terabyte hard drive built in, which is probably enough for about 50 movies (most will be between 20 and 40 gigabytes). That may be enough for some and too little for others, but you can always plug in an external drive if you need more space.

More information and specs on Sony's new player can be found at Sony's website, where early adopters and "Total Recall 2012" fans can pre-order it as well

There is no reason to have a 4k anything. 1080p is *more* than enough resolution for a living room.

Depends on your screen size and how far away you sit. We have some projector users here that would definitely benefit from resolutions > 1080p.

The PS4 will never be a reliable media-box. While the PS3 is the only one of the current console generations to be a passable media-box, it's not very good, either. They need more codex and container file support, and, the real big issue as far as Sony's concerned, no DRM. That isn't happening. I could see Microsoft leaving out DRM, but not Sony.

People use boxes for streaming media still? How quaint.

Like I want to spend a thousand dollars on a "SmartTV" that will be obsolete before its paid for and has all the same problems the boxes feeding it have.

I last bought a TV six years ago, a 40" Samsung job at bargain basement prices. I won't replace it until it breaks. (It replaced a 27" Toshiba CRT).

Keep telling yourself that while I stream my 1080p Game of Thrones blu-ray rips over wifi straight to my [less than $1000 over a year ago] TV.

Can't watch Game of Thrones on TV. Kids might come downstairs. That's the type of thing I watch on a laptop, in bed.

If I did, I can still stream my 1080p Game of Thrones Blu-ray rips to the PS3, if I felt it worth downloading files that big. I'm generally happy with 700 meg-per-episode 720p xvid rips. I could stream it over Wi-Fi, but I find actually wiring the PS3 to be more reliable, and since it never moves, it's not much of an inconvenience. (The same would be true of a smart TV...save wireless for the mobile devices. Run Cat6 to the stationary ones).

Apart from the PS3 having irritating DRM, and me not having shelled out any money on television at all in the last 5 years, I'm not really sure what the difference is. The screen on my old Samsung is perfectly fine. Why would I replace it before I have to? Even if I could get one I liked for $500, I don't happen to have a spare $500 lying around for random entertainment purchases. I don't want to spend any money I don't have to spend.

Fair enough. But those people are 80"+ and sitting closer than what about 8 feet?
